In a lot of ways splash down and recovery makes a lot of sense. For a start you're not hauling all that landing gear and associated weight into space. Also the idea of the shuttle landing on a strip only really made sense if the landing strip was hard by the take off site. Apparently that was part of the original plan, but for safety reasons the team wanted to take off over the atlantic. And there was no suitable landing site in Florida. So yes you have to haul the vehicle back to it's launch site after splashdown, but since they are planning to launch from the pacific the landing site will be fairly close to the launch site.

Go back years and you'll see scenes with bilboards clearly in shot. Or I remember one movie, I think a Roger Moore James Bond, where in one scene they drove past an indordinate number of billboard ads for the same product.

Clearly the #6 bike's throttle grip got twisted open by it getting entagled with the other bike. Something similar happened to me at an enduro years ago, but in my case the bikes didn't do a crazy dance. My bike just lay their screaming with the back tyre chewing chunks out of the seat and rear guard of the other bike until I got to the kill switch.

You can see why rider #6 was so angry. He gets taken out by another rider outbraking himself. Then seeing his bike doesn't look too damaged he wants to carry on. And then this freak accident happens and kills his chance of any points.

More to the point, how did a seven year old manage to operate the controls and see over the dash at the same time?

Oh and @Babycakes, the UK didn't cover the story a newspaper in the UK did. Pedantry aside you'll find that most of the news media around the world run kooky foreign stories especially if the story has a human interest angle.

Don't know about the US, but UK law is very different. In the UK this guy could find himself on a charge of stealing by finding. Under our laws you are required to hand over anything you find to the police. If it's not claimed after three months you can put in a claim to keep it.

@ John major "Where sound is the reception of moving air by a human ear. Moving air alone is not sound, at least that's the intent of the phrase."

I think most deaf people would disagree with you there. Most deaf people are well aware that sound exists even though they may never have heard it.

The question resolves quite easilly for any particular thinker. If you think sound is something that must be experienced by a human in some way, then a tree falling in a forest in the absense of (hearing) human beings makes no sound. If OTOH you believe that the movement of sound waves constitutes sound whether or not a human hears it, then the tree does make a sound.

The philosophical question of the tree falling in the forest is not unlike Schroedingers cat. The cat was a thought experiment which was used to demonstrate what Schroedinger thought ridiculous about the way some scientists discussed quantum theory. Likewise I think the tree falling in the forest demonstrates clearly how many people who claim to be philosophers aren't actually very good at thinking.

The problem with the increasing number of human rights that we actually have is that nobody is ranking them. For example if you say that internet access is a human right then you're putting it right up there with such things as liberty, clean drinking water or medical care. Does the UN really believe this to be the case?

Of course if internet access is a human right then the world is in trouble. There are still more people worldwide without internet access than with it. Moreover there are more people who give not a jot about the internet than have access to it.
