I never got the hang of SanFran, I really loved Portland, perhaps because it is smaller, has trams and used DOLLAR COINS!!! (and had that super grouse book warehouse, that micro brewery, that old flick palace...etc, etc).

IMHO,

having seen both sets of lights from non-good points ie Northern Finland and floating on a boat about a '000 clicks south of Adelaide (Oz).

The Northern Lights are fantastic (ok, I was closer than in the south). They whip slowly across the sky and are totally are like of the class of mesmerism.

After seeing these, I read a book by Billy Bryson that made me think that a special trip just to see these to far, far north would be worth it, no matter the cost.

IMO, if you haven't seen them, then you should.

Have seen a few of these in the wild. They are amazing to watch, once they know you see them they 'hide' in plain view. You have to keep your eye on them else they just disappear but if you keep staring at where they last were, then they seem to think the game is up and 'reappear' and speed to the next bolt hole to again 'disappear'.

I remember reading a sci-fi short story when I was a human about highly sophisticated aliens approaching Earthians about renting Jupiter to place a massive advertisement on it for passing spacecraft to see.

The twist being that the humans figured that if they need to advertise then they must have a competitor and "just wait until they see Saturn and her rings" or some such.

Anyone remember who wrote that?
