You Can Tame Feral Cats

Mike Fountaine bought a ranch in Santa Barbara, California, and found out it came with dozens of feral cats. Over time, he made friends with them. Not only has he tamed them, he has trained them! And he’s built elaborate doors and passageways to corral the cats, and they are caged at night to protect them from coyotes and other wildlife. The feeding thing at the beginning was “just a silly idea cos we thought it would look cute.”

One thing you don’t see in the video is kittens. Each cat was spayed or neutered as soon as possible and it’s been ten years since any were born. Fountaine founded an organization for animals called The Lucky Few. Read more about Fountaine’s adventures in cat taming. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Meet Matilda, the Cat with Mysterious Alien Eyes

Photo: Alien Cat Matilda

Is that an adorable cat or our new alien overlord so cute that she's out of this world?

Meet Matilda, a regular terrestrial tabby with a mysterious condition that caused her eyes to grow into large, dark alien-like orbs. Matilda's owners adopted the cat from a rescue group that removed her from a hoarder's home as a kitten. Back then, her eyes were normal.

One day, her right eye went black. "The regular vets were for the most part stumped," Matilda's owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, told PEOPLE, "After she saw a specialist we learned that it is a spontaneous lens luxation, which means that the lens detached from the rest of the eye for no known reason. This is the mysterious part of the problem since she is an otherwise healthy cat."

Eventually, Matilda's other eye also developed the same condition, and both of her eyes grew larger, giving the cat her distinct alien look.

"Unfortunately for Matilda ... she is developing glaucoma and will inevitably have to have surgery despite the difficult healing process," the cat's owner added.

Read more about Matilda' story over at her website and Instagram.

Denali

This is the story of a dog named Denali and his life with photographer Ben Moon. You will want to have a hankie ready, especially if you’ve ever loved a dog. Scratch that, you will cry even if you’ve never loved a dog. Denali had a wonderful life, but like that of all dogs, it was too short.

Baby Koala Clings to Mother Throughout Emergency Surgery

When Lizzy the Koala was hit by a car on the Warrego Highway in Australia, she suffered life threatening injuries including a collapsed lung and facial trauma. But thankfully, before the accident Lizzy had herself a good luck charm in the way of her six-month-old joey Phantom.

Lizzy underwent the surgery necessary to save her life, and tiny, one-pound Phantom clung to her throughout the procedure. Mother responded well. Both Lizzy and Phantom are spending some time in recovery at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, a facility founded by the late Steve Irwin  also known as the Crocodile Hunter  and his wife Terri.

This Cat Really Doesn’t Want Your Love Right Now

I’m pretty hard to impress these days, so if I see a picture on the ‘net that makes me laugh, it’s worth sharing with y’all. And this one made me laugh. It’s one of 16 pictures in a roundup of cats rejecting, or in some cases enduring, unwanted affection from humans. Two out of three cats at my house are the same way. They may put up with hugs because we feed them, but they won’t pretend to like it. -via Daily of the Day

Puppy Vines That Can Grow 'Round Your Heart and Squeeze

Vines: if one isn't careful, they'll gently grab on to the nearest thing around and take over. Especially in the summertime, one has to stay vigilant, as they are at their prime strength and season. These puppy vines are some formidable proof, my animal lover friends. You had better have a level head and stance so as not to be completely gripped and toppled by these ever loving, ever repeating cute loops.

See the entire collection of these heartbreakingly cute puppy Vines here.

Run Away! Run Away!

Redditor youphoric posted this picture, under the title “the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on.” Of course, he was instantly corrected, as rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents. But the title is a quote. The rest of the comment thread is a rundown of every line of the movie. You know which movie.

(YouTube link)

But I also learned that you can tell a rodent from a lagomorph by looking at its teeth. A lagomorph has four incisors on top, and a rodent has only two. So someone needs to look carefully into the mouth of the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog to make sure. Otherwise, we can assume it is no relation to the Rodents of Unusual Size

Don’t laugh (so much). There have been reports of killer rabbits right here. Remember that one that pursued Jimmy Carter? After all, rabbits used to be scary big.

German Shepherd Protects Lobster

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy. Come on, Squishy Come on, little Squishy.

Sami the German Shepherd has always been a maternal dog. She’s cuddled with babies, kittens, and even a snake before. But this time, she’s latched onto a lobster that was purchased for dinner! Watch her protect the crustacean from anyone who would harm it.

(YouTube link)

The alternate theory is that she’s protecting her dinner, but if that’s the case, why doesn’t she go ahead and eat it? Not long after this video was taken, the family got a new puppy, and Sami was very happy to be its mother. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Why is Sami protecting the lobster?

Cat Gives Birth to Kittens In Bird Nest

Henry McGauley of County Louth, Ireland, found a stray cat in a tree. That’s not unusual, but the cat was curled up in a bird’s nest where she had birthed four kittens! The white cat is familiar to the neighborhood, and McGauley wife Fiona had fed her before. The nest is about eight feet above the ground.

The couple think the nest may have belonged to a pair of wood pigeons who left it a few days ago and now it has furry, not feathered, squatters. Fiona said she will be moving the happy family onto terra firma as the kittens do not have the required wings to ensure a safe landing if they fall.

Henry chuckled as he said: “I always thought the cat was a bit bird-brained but I never expected her to move into a nest.”

The couple planned to move the kittens out of the tree to prevent them falling out of the nest. -via Arbroath
