Heroic Cat Saves Infant Abandoned in Freezing Temperatures

In Obninsk, Russia recently, an infant boy was abandoned outside in 30-degree weather. But thanks to a cat named Masha who cuddled up to him in the box in which he was left, the baby survived several hours in the cold.

The cat, a stray who is tended to by locals, is typically quiet. Yet on that day, when Masha encountered a woman she recognized by the name of Irina Lavrova, the shy feline sounded the alarm, meowing and making a scene. Lavrova said,

"I thought that perhaps she had injured herself. Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby."

The baby was taken to the hospital, where he was determined to be suffering no ill effects from the incident. See a photo gallery and read more on the story here. -Via People.com

I don't know about the US, but in the UK for many years parents were advised to use cat-nets to stop cats getting into cots with babies "in case they smothered them".
This despite there being not a single case of cats smothering babies in the whole of Europe for the preceeding 100 years.
Which of course, just shows how well the nets work.

When my daughter was in her crib, our fat cat would jump in any time she cried. If she was just lonely, the cat was all she needed to go back to sleep. Maybe that's why she's so cat-crazy now.

Some cats are very good with kids. One of ours used to sit with both our babies when they were sleeping - when they stirred she'd come and find us and poke us with one claw until we came and sorted things out to her satisfaction.

I agree. The outcome could have been horrifying. At least the child has a chance to be raised by someone caring and capable of showing him love and a good life.

Great cat story, but I am upset that the person who abandoned this baby couldn't have left him in a subway station or anywhere out of the cold. I understand that the consequences of being caught could be pretty bad, but this is life or death here.
