Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Getting a Stiff Competition: Here Comes Viagra Gum!

Alex

The little blue pill is going to have some competition Pfizer's patent on Viagra ends next year, so the company is trying to market something edgier: Viagra gum.

The market for drugs to correct erectile dysfunction has passed $5 billion a year from sales to tens of millions of men. And it is increasingly being driven by novel applications to compete with the lower-priced generics on the horizon.

“ ‘Gimmick’ is a strong word, but all of this is designed to create new brand identities,” Dr. Joseph P. Alukal, an assistant professor and director of reproductive health at the New York University School of Medicine, said. “A newer product, less expensive, and a new form of taking it — all that might convince more people to try it.”

Kohler Numi: $6,400 Fancy Toilet Can Do Everything Except Poop For You

Alex

If you have money to flush down the drain, then surely you're not going to sit your bum down on some plebeian toilet. Thankfully, Kohler has got you covered.

Behold the Numi Bidet Toilet. At a mere $6,400 it's a steal:

The Numi does just about everything for you, aside from the stuff that, well, only you can do. Looking something akin to a fancy pop-top waste bin, Numi comes complete with a self-opening and closing lid so you never have to touch the toilet seat; a self-cleaning bidet with adjustable controls for temperature and water pressure; heating elements to keep your toes and tush toasty; an illuminated panel for nighttime rendezvous; a built-in speaker system that connects to a remote docking station to ensure only you know exactly what you're doing in there; and a deodorizing element that sucks air from the bowl through a charcoal filter. Of course, no connected appliance would be complete without a touchscreen, and the Numi's no exception; it has a touch panel remote that you can use to set to your specifications.

Student Yawned in Class ... And Couldn't Close Her Mouth!

Alex

Got a boring class? Whatever you do, suppress that irresistible urge to yawn, just in case. Here's what happened to a British teen after she yawned in one particularly boring class:

Holly Thompson, 17, of Kingsthorpe, Northampton, was in the middle of a particularly enthralling class on politics when she reacted to the subject matter like many other students would -- she yawned.

But what happened next wasn't so typical. Her trap wouldn't shut, making her look like an anime character in a state of shock. [...]

"I was so shocked, my expression probably said it all," she said. "I nudged my friend to show her what had happened but I was so embarrassed. When we realized we couldn't close it, she had to tell the teacher."

You're Not Stuck in Traffic. You Are Traffic

Alex

Someone handy with Photoshop subverted an advertisement (photo by: Carlton Reid [Flickr]) for a satnav gadget into a call to ride bikes to work. The downside of that, obviously, is that you'd have to ride in snow (like the photo shows above).

Honest Logos

Alex

Graphic artist Viktor Hertz turned famous logos into "Honest Logos," where he "[reveal] the actual content of the company, what they really should be called. Some are cheap, some might be a bit funny, some will maybe be brilliant."

The Floors of Heike Weber

Alex

Heike Weber surely didn't listen to her parents as a toddler writing on walls with crayons. But that probably turned out well, as her art installation, where she drew on acrylic floor and walls with permanent markers, is absolutely fascinating.

Being in Space No Excuse for Astronauts Not to File Taxes

Alex

Did you file your taxes yet? No? Got a good excuse - like being in space? Not good enough for the IRS: astronauts orbiting Earth in the International Space Station have to file taxes just like everybody else!

As it turns out, being 220 miles (354 kilometers) above the planet is no excuse to file late. Thankfully, Cady Coleman and Ron Garan, who are currently living and working aboard the orbiting outpost, most likely took care of that already.

"I'm not sure of their exact situations, but they could either file early, or if they have spouses, their spouses could file for them," NASA spokesperson Kylie Clem told SPACE.com.

East of the South Pole

If you stand at the South Pole and walk in any direction, you'd be walking north, wouldn't you? So how do people in Antarctica read a map or give directions? Minnesotastan looked it up, and the answer is: they throw out the directions from the globe and make up a system. The continent is labeled with "East Antarctica" and "West Antarctica" in this map, but of course you must go south to get to either. There are actually two conventions for mapping the continent, as you'll read in this post at TYWKIWDBI. Link
