Ray Charles' Personal Stationery

Allegedly, this is a photo of the personal stationery used by musician Ray Charles in 1990. Musical staff would be a wonderful medium for letter composition, don't you think?

Clown Car Physics

There's really no trick to clown cars, according to Car and Driver. No trap doors, no hidden panels, and the cars are made from real cars. The vehicle's guts are totally removed and clowns are crammed in every which way. In fact, they even know exactly how many clowns different car makes and models will hold (the original VW bug holds 17 while the original Mini Cooper can fit 21).

Earliest-Known Depiction of the Easter Bunny

If you ask me, this early representation of the Easter Bunny resembles a Lepus-like reindeer. It was drawn by a German schoolmaster who moved to Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1757. If you want to see the art in person, Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware, is exhibiting the piece from now through Mother's Day, when it will be taken off of display for cleaning and preservation before it becomes a permanent part of their collection.

China Knuckles

Juliet Ames of The Broken Plate Pendant Company made this knuckleduster out of china:

I pity the fool who messes with me in a dark alley. *SMASH* Only drawback is that I bet they can only be used once.

Probably.

Russian Map of The Hobbit

Alex

Frank Jacobs of Strange Maps blog posted this map that accompanied the Russian translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. It has a distinctly Slavic motif, including log homes for the Hobbit dwellings (instead of those cute Hobbit houses).

ICC Judge: No More Wigs!

The International Criminal Court is currently addressing, among other issues, Kenya's 2007 presidential election. A judge politely suggested that attorneys stop wearing the wigs traditionally worn in Britain and its former colonies:

Justice Ekaterina Trendafilova paused briefly at the end of the hearing to pass a hair-raising judgment.

"This is not the dress code of this institution," she said.

"In this quite warm weather maybe it will be more convenient to be without wigs," she added with a smile.

It is unusual for lawyers to appear at the International Criminal Court in wigs, but not unheard of. At least three lawyers wore wigs during the initial appearance of three Kenyan suspects on April 8, without Justice Trendafilova issuing any dress code guidelines.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Sale

The car that was built for the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is up for auction at eBay.
Built on a custom ladder frame chassis, many old world forms of car building were employed, and modern technology stepped in to create a vehicle which was both accurate enough to fool veteran and classic car experts, when held under the scrutiny of 70mm cinema cameras, and durable enough to withstand everything from driving in sand, cobbled streets and down staircases. The bonnet is crafted of polished aluminum; the boat deck is hand-crafted of red and white cedar built by boat builders in Buckinghamshire, and the array of brass fittings were obtained from Edwardian cars. Even the alloy dashboard plate is from a British World War I fighter plane! The car weighs approximately 2 tons and measures 17 1/2 feet in length and is powered by a Ford 3 litre V-6 engine mated to an automatic transmission.

Other vehicles were built for the film to be used for special effects, but this particular car was the only one that actually worked. And it only has 44 miles on it. However, bidding has started at a million dollars. Link -via the Presurfer

Taking a Cab From NY to LA

Alex

John Belitsky and pal Dan Wuebben wanted to do something "magical" so the pair hopped on a taxi cab in New York ... and ordered a cross-country trip to Los Angeles:

The 2,448-mile trip took six days and included a stop in Las Vegas where the friends won $2,000. [...]

On 22 April, after their winning streak in Las Vegas, he tweeted: "Woke up Alam to a shower of $100 bills at sunrise."
