French Toast Isn't French - Here's How It Got Its Name

Image: bhofack22/Bigstock

French toast, that bit of gastronomical yumminess that is fried egg/bread combo, is an old dish. In fact, it predates the founding of France.

According to the Apicius, a collection of recipes from the early 5th century AD, the dish we now know as the French toast existed as early as the age of the Roman Empire. In their style of French toast, called Pan Dulcis, Romans would soak bread in milk (and sometimes also egg) mixture, then fry it in oil or butter.

In the 15th century English court of Henry V, a version of the French toast called "pain perdu" or "lost bread" was the culinary rage. Then, it was called "lost" bread because the recipe called for soaking hard or stale bread in a mixture of milk and egg, then frying it. Pain perdu is what the French call French toast today.

So, if the French did not invent the modern French toast, who did? According to legend, it was an Albany, New York, innkeeper named Joseph French. He created the dish in 1724, and advertised it as "French Toast" because he was grammatically inept and forgot the apostrophe.

Danny Groner told us how the French toast and 8 other site-specific foods got their names in this neat article over at Bigstock - Thanks Danny!

Kyl21, the World's First "Sci-Fi" Popsicle

Image: Kyl21 - via Fast Co.

These ain't your kids popsicles!

Food designer David Marx of independent food lab The Science Kitchen in Berlin, Germany, has re-engineered the popsicle to make it fit for the future. Behold the Kyl21, the world's first "sci-fi" popsicle.

"Popsicles know no age, no gender, no borders: They're beloved all over the world," Marx told John Brownlee of Fast Co., "but after 100 years of popsicle history, it hasn't changed much. We thought it was the right time to bring the popsicle to the next level, making it healthier, prettier, and more functional."

Kyl21 - which is the combination of molekyl, the Norwegian word for molecule, and 21, the age of Marx's intended "grown up" popsicle - comes in geometric fantastic shapes and have flavors ranging from organic to vegan to alcoholic cocktails. Yum!

Fried Fair Food Meets Thanksgiving

The Texas State Fair in Dallas runs through October 20th. One advantage of being so far south and having your agricultural fair so late in the year is that your deep-fried fair food can be inspired by autumn holidays. Behold, the Fried Thanksgiving Dinner! It's turkey meat mixed with stuffing rolled into a ball, which is dipped in cream corn, then rolled in cornmeal, and deep fried. These balls are served with two dipping sauces: gravy and cranberry.

The dish won the Most Creative award in the Big Tex Choice Awards, the fair competition that spurs chefs to go all out. Other competitors included fried spaghetti and meatballs, fried Nutella, deep-fried Cuban roll (which won the award for the tastiest dish), fried pimento cheese, chicken-fried meatloaf, and fried millionaire pie. I want that pie. Get a rundown of the different fried creations at Gizmodo.

Another Crazy Doritos Flavor You'll Never Get to Eat

Here in the US, most of our big news about Doritos involve Taco Bell, but over in Japan, the company is always releasing new and exciting flavors into the marketplace. In fact, they just added a new flavor to the line up, Avocado Cheese. No longer do you have to dip your nachos in guacamole -well, at least, if you live in Japan that is.

Of course, even if you do live in a place where you can get you hands on these goodies, you'd better act fast, as the limited edition flavor is only around until February 28.

Super Giant Peanut Butter Cup

Veteran chocolatier Nick Monte of the Village Chocolate Shoppe in Bennington, Vermont, made a peanut butter cup that weighs 230 pounds!

It's an impressive peanut butter cup and we have the specs: 59.5 inches wide, an impressive 70.1 pounds of chocolate, and 159.7 pounds of peanut butter on the inside. All total -- weighing in at 229.8 pounds of candy glory.

All profits from selling the pieces are going to Project Against Violent Encounters or PAVE, a local organization helping violence survivors.

Sales of pieces from Friday alone $1,280 for PAVE. Is this a world record? The papers and stats have been filed with the Guinness people, so we will find out soon. -via Laughing Squid

The 'Roni Roll

(Photo: Forking Tasty)

Do you want a hamburger? Well, sorry, but we’re fresh out. You could have a ramen burger, a macaroni and cheese burger or a spaghetti burger.

Alternatively, if you want to try something really new, then Jason and Anthony Anello offer the ‘Roni Roll. It’s a sandwich made on compressed bricks of cooked Pasta Roni. Specifically, they used bucatini pasta, which is a thick, tube-like pasta. Between these improvised buns they placed a double portion of parmesan chicken. The Anellos plan to market their new invention at locations in northern Brooklyn.

Two More Souls Are Ready to Join the 999 Happy Haunts

Redditor TheSharkFromJaws must be a huge Disney fan. How do I know that? Well, he or she is part of a happy couple not only had this epic Haunted Mansion at their wedding, but they were also actually married at Walt Disney World.

The cake is absolutely amazing, adorned with detailing from the Haunted Mansion wallpapper and a few of the great stretching portraits from the elevator and topped with a special Dune Buggy filled with a few of the hitchhiking ghosts riding and the newlyweds.

The Magic Restroom Cafe

You've read about the toilet-themed restaurant in Taiwan. I know we've blogged about it. Now, the Magic Restroom Cafe is open in Los Angeles. Diners sit on toilet seats, eat out of toilet-shaped bowls, and select foods with awful names. The walls are decorated with shower heads!

Sadly, not all chairs are toilet seats, and none of the toilets have water tanks attached. Thankfully, seat covers are employed, and no one's actually forced to cop a squat while downing dishes so lovingly named: "black poop" (chocolate sundae), "smells-like-poop" (braised pork over rice), "constipation" (zha jiang mian), "bloody number two" (vanilla-strawberry sundae). For an Alinea-esque multi-sensory dining experience, it's best to order the stinky tofu for the pleasant malodor.

Only time will tell whether Americans flock to a toilet restaurant the way people in Taiwan do. Read mofre about it at Eater L.A.  -via Laughing Squid

Finally You Can Get Drunk On Pizza

Here at Neatorama, we love our pizza. In fact, Miss C will sometimes eat a whole pizza hoping to just get a buzz. So just wait until she finds out about the new cocktail at LA restaurant Trattoria Neapolis that is pretty much a pizza in a glass.

It would be easy to think this is just a slightly strange Bloody Mary, it really is more pizza-flavored than anything else. While there's no crust, everything else is there, starting with tomato water, porcini mushroom powder and muddled basil. The cocktail then features basil vodka, vodka infused with ghost peppers and is topped off with a parmesean and mozzerella foam.

10 of the Most Epic Stoner Foods Around

You don't have to be a stoner to appreciate these dishes. What these recipes are is ultimate junk food, even when they are homemade. They are calorie-laden mashups with no respect for appearance or nutrition. They exist merely for hedonistic pleasure. May I present Deep Fried Deviled Eggs.

Deviled eggs are delicious, but they aren't nearly fatty enough for some people. That's why stoners should try deep frying the boiled egg whites in a light batter before adding the filling (seriously, do this before you get wasted people). Bam! Hot, crispy, sweet, egg-y goodness.

And you can add sausage and bread crumbs a la Scotch eggs -or even bacon. The quote does bring up a serious issue with calling these "stoner foods." Some items in this list can be bought ready-made, and some are simple to prepare, but a few of them should only be cooked while all your wits are about you, otherwise you risk both injury and a ruined snack. Then again, if you can get past the weirdness, you can enjoy them whatever state you are in. See all ten snack items at Oddee.

Edvard Munch's The Scream Cheese Brownies

Edvard Munch (1863-1944), a Norwegian Expressionist painter, is perhaps most widely known for his 1893 painting “The Scream.” This painting sold last year for a record $120 million.

SugarWinzy’s scream cheese version is filled with chocolatey horror. First, she poured the brownie batter into her baking pan.  She placed cream cheese into a squeeze bottle, then squirted small amounts on the surface of the brownie batter. Then she used a toothpick to paint the surface with the cream cheese. The image remained impressively consistent after baking.

Baked Potato Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

BS in the Kitchen named this creation baked potato grilled cheese sandwiches, but they're really more like potato skin grilled cheese sandwiches (though they aren't made with only the skins) because the potatoes are sliced nice and thin and then fried before being added to the sandwich. The delicious treats are then topped with cheddar cheese, sour cream, bacon and green onions before they are fried up into crispy, fatty snacks.

While the site doesn't mention this, I feel like ranch or blue cheese dressing would be a killer dipping sauce on these sandwiches, the same way you dunk potato skins in those great sauces.
