Shields made a pancake with holes in the middle, then wrapped that pancake around a cylindrical mold. He sealed it with additional pancake batter and then placed a recorder mouthpiece in one end. Now it's a playable flute that his kids clearly love.

The ancient architechs obviously knew what they were doing - even if we don't understand how they did it.

Ancient engineers and inventors were in a situation where there was no 'status quo' or solidly set assumptions to prevent the creative process. Some good ideas come from trial and error, and usually the best ones become known due to the error. I've also found that technological breakthroughs happen not from the constant improvement of the leading technology, but the stepping back and looking at something in the past and making it better with currant resources.
