UPDATE 2/26/15: Rebecca Denfip, the model playing Cammy-Fett, stops by to identify herself. Thanks, Rebecca!

Florida Man’s Obituary Lists His Cause of Death as “An Uppercut from Batman”

(Image: DC)

If you have to die, die in such a way that will be memorable—in a good way! You don’t want to be remembered as the guy who died in a fatal blogging accident or someone who was beaten to death by a Girl Scout after trying to steal her cookies. Die in a way that will make men of quality envy you: death by Batman.

Stephen Merrill, 31, of Winter Haven, Florida passed away last week. The cause of his death was unknown at the time when it was necessary to write an obituary. So his friend Brandon Moxam suggested “uppercut from Batman.”

(May each of us be so fortunate as to have a friend like Brandon Moxam.)

Merrill’s fiancée, Stephanie Vella, consented. ABC Action News quotes her as saying, “He would have been honored to have died by an uppercut from Batman.” As would we all.

Initially, the newspaper The Ledger would not agree to publish such a lighthearted obituary. But it eventually relented and published it. You can read the full obituary here.

Merrill’s family and friends remember him as a funny guy who loved comics. His memorial service reflected this. ABC Action News describes it:

His friends and family all wore superhero shirts to honor Merrill's love for comics.  The celebration also included a Captain America's shield made from flowers and a quote on the program from one of his favorite movies, 'The Avengers.'

Vella says Merrill had qualities similar to Captain America. “Captain America was about helping others and so was Stephen. He left an impression on people if you ever came in contact with him, he was your friend.”

I will inform my wife that if I die and she is not under suspicion as the perpetrator, then she should list of my cause of death as “wedgie by the Wonder Twins.”

How Every Mario Bros. Game Ties Together In Chronological Order

The Mario Bros. franchise has come a really long way from the days of two tiny Bros flipping and kicking turtles and crabs and such down in the sewer.

(Image Link)

The Mushroom Kingdom, and everything to do with the Super Mario Bros. universe, has been expanded by dozens of titles and tons of peripheral content which has brought every bit of that colorful world to life.

Fans have suspected for a while that the entire Super Mario Bros. franchise could be linked together into a somewhat cohesive storyline, but where would this tale trail begin?

(YouTube Link)

According to this comprehensive and lengthy video by Scorpigator Films the story didn’t start with Mario Bros. but rather on Yoshi's Island, and there's still plenty of room for expansion in the story of the Bros.

Dead Man Dresses as the Green Lantern at His Funeral

(Photo: Ricardo Arduengo/AP)

Here lies, er, stands Renato Garcia. He passed away at the age of 50 in San Jose, Puerto Rico. He once found a uniform for the Green Lantern Corps in a bag of donated clothes. Though he lacked an Oan power ring, Garcia felt inspired to wear the uniform for several weeks. When he died, his family thought it appropriate to bury him in it.

Posing bodies for viewings is becoming a popular funeral custom in Puerto Rico. The New York Daily News reports:

Posing embalmed bodies at wakes and funerals is nothing new in Puerto Rico, where the practice has taken off. Georgina Lloren, 80, was posed in her favorite rocking chair after her death in San Jose last year.

The last wish of another man, Angel Pantoja Medina, was to stand at his own wake so in 2008, family members abided.

Christopher Rivera, a professional boxer, was stood up in the corner of a boxing ring and dressed up in his pugilists gear after his murder in 2014. Another murder victim, David Morales Colon, was propped up on his motorcycle after he 2010 death.

This is a great practice! And I have just the right idea for a suit for my own funeral.

Kid Writes Letter to Batman, Batman Writes Back

Redditor I_Say_ writes, "My son wrote a letter to batman about a week and a half ago. Today he got his 'response'." You can view a larger version here.

Before you get too excited: Yes, Batman is real. But, no, he doesn't respond to letters. I_Say_ wrote this letter for his/her son. It's a fine job, though it does make Batman look a bit boring. I suppose that Batman doesn't have a lot of time to devote to fan mail. If he had only 3 minutes or so to devote to writing to each child, he's bound to resort to tedious platitudes that can be rattled off quickly.

8 Classic Movies That Nurtured Us Into Geeks

Was there a certain movie that you watched as a kid that turned you into a real fan? One that opened up a whole new world to you, be it sci-fi, fantasy, tech, or something else? The ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s were full of classic films that tied together a generation of geeks that now run the internet. Geeks Are Sexy lists eight of those movies for your nostalgic pleasure. If you are of a different age, you may have a different list. Personally, I would include Planet of the Apes (1968), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Fantastic Voyage (1966), The Time Machine (1960), and The Andromeda Strain (1971). Because I’m an old geek.

What I Would Do If I Were Batman

Chris Brennaman, like many people, has thought about how cool it would be to be Batman: Attractive millionaire by day, terrifying crime-fighting hero by night. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Except, I wouldn’t be awesome.

Not really. No one would be. If anyone were in fact Batman, that would mean we would have access to all the resources that make Batman, well, Batman. And having access to all that and opting to put on a cape and a cowl and patrol the cities at night in the most badass vehicles ever is probably the most irresponsible thing a person could do, especially if what that person wants to do is make real change.

What could the character do in the real world that would be more awesome than being Batman? A lot of stuff, if he weren’t so stuck in the rut of playing the hero and protecting his secret identity. Read about four major ways Bruce Wayne could be more effective than Batman at Forces of Geek.

New Furby Looks Like Chewbacca

Furbacca looks cute. But he hates to lose and has been known to rip people's arms out of their sockets when he does. So play nice, pet him, and let him win.

He's Hasbro's latest Furby electronic toy. He turns, responds to you (in a friendly way), and displays Star Wars-related images on his eyeballs. Mashable describes him:

There are sensors on his head, under his stomach, mouth and tail, so if you give him a little scratch between the ears, he'll love you even more. If you pull his tail, he gets cranky — you can see the anger building in his LCD eyes. Depending on his mood, Furbacca's eyes can populate with pictures of X-Wing Fighters and Imperial Star Destroyers.

5 Coolest ‘Space Cowboys’ of All Time

Who’s your favorite “space cowboy”? Buzz Aldrin? Well, maybe, but this list deals with fictional characters from movies and TV. Before you try to envision your favorite, here’s the definition used:

It basically means any character from sci-fi (in this case, TV and movies) who flew around in space, but was also pretty much a cowboy. Same ideals and similar aesthetic (albeit a bit sci fi’d out). He is calm, cool, collected, and is generally not one to be trifled with. Often they are usually bounty hunters, but can come in any many shapes and sizes. The fact is, the space cowboy is everywhere, but there are no lists about them (until now, that is). Though there have been many in science fiction, here are five space cowboys are are pretty much the coolest dudes in all the cosmos.

Geeks Are Sexy justifies their picks for the top five space cowboys in pop culture. You may agree or diagree, and there may be a couple you haven’t seen, so there’s a new movie or two in your “must see” list.

Storm Troopers March in Fan’s Funeral Procession

Gordon Deacon of Llanedeyrn in Cardiff, Wales, passed away at age 58 from pancreatic and liver cancer. He was an avid Star Wars and Liverpool Football Club fan, so his widow gave him the funeral that reflected both interests. His four children and many mourners wore Liverpool shirts, and the horse-drawn hearse was escorted by four Storm Troopers. Deacon’s widow Caroline had asked that mourners wear red shirts for Liverpool or Star Wars costumes, but banned Darth Vader, because the family wanted no one to wear black. See more pictures, and video clips from the funeral procession at Buzzfeed.

Fifty Shades Of Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi is an incredibly talented actor with the dreamiest eyes in the biz, so it's a shame that producers passed on casting him as Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey.

But, just like the character Mr. Pink he played in Reservoir Dogs, you can't keep Buscemi down for long, and when you tell Steve he can't let his sexy shine on the screen he sets his smolder to supernova. (Contains NSFW language)

This trailer recut created by Boo Ya Pictures reveals what Fifty Shades will be missing when it hits theaters- BDSM ala Buscemi!

Motivational Posters As Written By Werner Herzog

For some motivational posters need soft, fuzzy messages accompanied by images of soft, fuzzy critters, or a slice of life photo accompanied by a quote by a rich and/or dead famous person. These are not the posters those fuzzy loving folks are looking for, even though many of them feature fuzzy critters.

These are motivational posters for people with a bleak view of the world, featuring nuggets of stark wisdom drawn from Werner Herzog's mind and critter pics drawn from some stock photo site.

The Werner Herzog Inspirationals Tumblr contains all the motivational posters a cinematic life could ever need, and they'd look great in a school counselor's office, psychiatric chambers or an AV Club's storage closet.
