Chewbacca Arrested

(Image credit: Ukraine Police at Instagram)

The elections in Ukraine are contentious enough between the pro-Russian and anti-Russian factions, but now they’ve gone and arrested Chewbacca! The Wookiee was accompanying mayoral candidate Darth Vader to a polling place.

The Star Wars character Chewbacca has been dragged before a court in Odessa, in perhaps the most surreal episode in local elections across Ukraine that have been both hotly contested and rife with dirty tricks. The man inside the costume was fined 170 hryvnia (£5) for the “administrative offence” of not being able to produce identification documents.

A statement posted on the official Instagram account of the Ukrainian police read: “Nothing unusual here, just Chewbacca detained for being without documents while driving Darth Vader to the elections in Odessa. The Sith Lord has already claimed this was illegal as Chewbacca is his pet and general servant and thus does not require documents.”

Police had earlier dragged “Chewbacca” from a polling station and put him in a van after accusing him of disrupting proceedings. The person in the costume said he had been there to support Darth Vader, who was attempting to vote.

Other sources report that the offense was campaigning on election day. This Darth Vader is one of several people who have campaigned under the name while running for office under Ukraine’s Internet Party in the past few years. Some races have included Padme Amidala, Yoda, and Chewbacca. The party is also responsible for the new Darth Vader statue in Odessa.

Thanks to pop culture weapons are the first thing on everyone's mind when they think about survival during the end times, and that goes double for a zombie-related apocalyptic scenario.

If you're wondering what the weapons of that dark future might look like you should check out this gallery of Homemade Weapons with the tagline- when you can't buy a gun you can build one.

Underappreciated Background Characters You See In Every Movie

Aside from repeating tropes, themes and plots, filmmakers also like to recycle background characters to ensure the human clutter behind the stars in every scene looks comfortably familiar to viewers.

This recycling and reuse of filler characters means your favorite background friends will be in every movie, like the steadfast shopper or the trucker who keeps on truckin' no matter what's happening on top of his truck.

Dorkly's JHALL brought six background characters into the spotlight with his illustrations, and once you've seen them all in cartoon form you'll be seeing them in every movie you watch!

Some Of The Scariest And Most Influential Canadian Horror Films

Canadian filmmakers are often overshadowed by their American counterparts because Hollywood is the hub of the entertainment industry, and the press doesn't give our cousins to the north their dues.

But Canadian creators have been changing the face of the industry for decades, sharing their unique view of the world through visual media, and their visions are often far more interesting than the played out ideas presented by mainstream Hollywood movies.

The Canadian contribution to the horror genre is no less interesting or important, because Canada gave us David Cronenberg, genre influencing films like Cube and Ginger Snaps, and classics like Black Christmas and My Bloody Valentine.

When you're looking for a fright flick to watch this Halloween you should consider going Canadian, and if you like your horror dark and disturbing yet cerebral you can't go wrong with a Cronenberg!

Debate Between PC And Console Gaming Reaches A New Level Of Ridiculousness

As a general rule you should refrain from using the term "master race" unless you're discussing things like racism, Nazi ideology or eugenics.

But if you're trying to make a big impression, good or bad, using the term "master race" will definitely get you noticed!

In this instance the term is used by comedy troupe The Warp Zone to highlight the fact that the battle between console and PC gaming is getting downright ridiculous, because it's all good!

Han Solo's Flashback

The best part of the official trailer for The Force Awakens is the part where Han Solo assures Finn and Rey that the stories they’ve heard are true. What must he be thinking when he says that?

(YouTube link)

Nick Skywalk remixed the trailer with clips from other films to make “those stories about what happened” real, to Solo and to us, which just makes looking forward to the new movie more exciting. This is really well done.  -via Uproxx

Statue of Lenin Replaced with Darth Vader

(Photo: VG)

For decades, a statue of Soviet dictator Vladimir Lenin stood in Odessa, Ukraine. But now it has been replaced with the image of Darth Vader, a Ukrainian politician. It was made of gypsum, which had been decaying for a while.

Lord Vader replaced the head and added decorative flourishes to the original, as well as a titanium cover to strengthen the structure. It's invulnerable, except for an insignificantly small exhaust port. The head is a WiFi hotspot, which Lord Vader hopes will attract visitors to his statue and his cause.

Fifteen Flesh Crawling Facts About David Cronenberg's The Fly

David Cronenberg took the frightening scientific theories presented in the original version of The Fly and ran off into a dark corner with them, adding horrifying special effects to a tale that was already especially horrible to imagine.

The 1986 version of The Fly isn't like other reboots because it actually improves on the original film, and the disturbing special effects by Chris Walas, who won an Oscar for his work on the film, are still horrifying to behold nearly thirty years later.

(YouTube Link)

Speaking of horrifying, Geena Davis was so horrified while filming the scene where Seth's ear falls off that her look isn't acting, because she was genuinely disgusted by the effect. Now that's Oscar worthy!

Gamers Confess Their Darkest Moments While Playing The Sims

If you're looking for a true-to-life human life simulator then The Sims isn't your cup of digital tea, but if you embrace the inherent strangeness found when The Sims are left to their own devices then real life may pale in comparison.

Sims strangeness is generally whimsical and kept T for Teen, but as you'd expect from a video game that simulates real life things can get mighty dark, like killing a Sim by drowning him then make other Sims wear swimwear to his funeral dark.

People who were willing to confess to their Sims related crimes shared some of their darkest moments playing The Sims during an Ask Reddit session, and their answers were funny, horrifying and horrifyingly funny! (Contains NSFW language)

10 Mistakes You Might Have Missed In The Original Star Wars Trilogy

Well before George Lucas "fixed" mistakes in his movies by adding cheesy CGI characters and effects then eliminating the original cut he and the original Star Wars trilogy crew simply left them all in.

These mistakes became geeky easter eggs for fans to discover and discuss online, but most of these nerfherded scenes were originally left in the films because it would have cost too much to re-shoot the scenes.

Screen Rant is back with another entertaining compilation of cinematic calamities, this time focusing on the original Star Wars trilogy to reveal mistakes we might have missed. Who knew Jedis had to plug in their lightsabers?!

How Back To The Future II Should Have Started

The folks at How It Should Have Ended looked at the film Back to the Future Part II and decided it needed a new beginning instead of a new ending.

(YouTube link)

Their thinking is explained at the YouTube page:

In the film, Back to the Future, the first time Doc tests the time machine is by sending his dog Einstein 1 minute into the future. Doc puts his dog in the car, drives it down the parking lot, and zap the car bursts into awesome flaming tire trails. Marty immediately thinks Doc killed his dog, because both the car and dog disappear. For a whole minute Einstein was missing until the DeLorean finally comes back from the past. This is why "Back to the Future 2" sending Marty into the future to see his own future children is impossible. When you travel into the future your timeline is you going into the future. A copy of you is not left behind to live on to 2015, so you can't go forward to see what your future self would be like. You would jump ahead to a world that lost you in 1985. People would think you had died. But that's not as fun of a story to tell is it.

There’s one problem with that. Einstein is a dog. He didn’t have the time or the knowledge, let alone the dexterity, to program the Delorean to go back to the past. Marty and Doc know how to program the time machine, so they can go where they want to in time. But the video is still funny. -via Viral Viral Videos

Have Bela Lugosi And Boris Karloff Come Back From The Grave?!

The creatures of the night are crawling out of their dank graves and dark tombs to get us all in the Halloween mood, but you're safe (for now) because these aren't the real monsters we fear.

No, these are simply amazing sculptures by Mike Hill that look so realistic they make our skin crawl!

These incredibly lifelike sculptures celebrate the early years of monster movies, as well as paying homage to moments that changed the horror game, like Rick Baker's groundbreaking special effects work on An American Werewolf In London.

Mike Hill's sculptures really speak for themselves, but many of Mike's works deal with macabre subject matter so maybe "scream for themselves" is a more appropriate description!
