How to Make a Death Star Cheeseball

Before you argue that a Death Star is an inappropriate theme for Christmas, let me remind you of the traditional arguments that always happen whenever relatives assemble. You had a preview of them at Thanksgiving. Go prepared this time with a planet killer.

Jennifer Landa made this cheeseball from cream cheese, bacon bits, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped cilantro, garlic, brown cumin, cayenne pepper, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce and a jalapeño. She mixed the ingredients, shaped the mixture into a ball, then refrigerated it for an hour. Then she carved the lines with a knife and dug out the concavity for the superlaser with a spoon.

Rankin/Bass did a rather longer animated version for TV that is pretty faithful to the book, and even used Tolkien's lyrics for writing up the songs. (The main title theme is a rather sad exception.) Worth checking out if you're a fan.

Couldn't finish it? Really? I read The Hobbit several times before I finally waded through all three books of The Lord Of The Rings. You really ought to give it another shot. Pick up the version illustrated by Alan Lee; his drawings really add a lot to it.

BTW, happy belated birthday!
