The Child Prodigies Who Became 20th-Century Celebrities

In the early 20th century, when the development of intelligence tests coincided with the rise of tabloid journalism, the public became obsessed with child prodigies. Children who exhibited various special talents were rushed to print, and became celebrities. But fame came with its own problems.

At roughly the height of the prodigy craze, in 1926, Winifred Sackville Stoner, an author, lecturer, and gifted self-publicist, had the ingenious idea of bringing some of the little geniuses together. The founder of an organization called the League for Fostering Genius and herself the mother of a famous prodigy named Winifred Sackville Stoner, Jr., Stoner wanted to introduce the celebrated children to one another and to connect them with rich patrons who might bankroll their future feats. “Surely there is no better way in which to spend one’s millions,” the New York Times quoted her as saying.

Though the full guest list may be lost in time, the party’s attendees included William James Sidis, a young man in his twenties who had been a freshman at Harvard at age 11, and Elizabeth Benson, a 12-year-old who was about to enter college. Benson would later remember Nathalia Crane, a precocious poet of 12, as being there as well, although if she was, contemporary news accounts seem to have missed her. So what became of these dazzlingly bright prospects of yesteryear?

Smithsonian has the stories of several of the most celebrated child prodigies, and what became of them later in life. The stories are not all sunlight and roses, as the publicity surrounding their childhoods led them to shun the spotlight and for some, even their talents. Link

A Tale of Two Pictures

A couple of weeks ago, Anne Belanger of New Westminster, British Columbia, was heartbroken to see her son's second grade class picture. Seven-year-old Miles Ambridge was smiling brightly, sitting in his wheelchair, off to the side of his class. Miles has spinal muscular atrophy, which does not affect his cognitive abilities, but prevents him from walking. The stigma of being different from the other kids was bad enough without being pushed off to the side in a photo that will last forever. Miles' parents asked the photo company to reshoot the picture, and posted the image to the photo company's website, from which it went viral.

Belanger thinks it was Miles’s smile in the photo that struck a chord with so many.

“He’s just so happy,” she said. “And that’s the thing — he’s oblivious to the whole thing but he’s so happy and he wants to fit in.”

Last week, Lifetouch Canada admitted its photographer made a mistake and said it had already retaken the photo.

Lifetouch said it trains its photographers to arrange students differently when working with a child in a wheelchair. In this case, the composition “wasn’t done right,” said territory manager Dean Cochrane.

In the new picture, Miles appears with his group just like any child.

“You can’t pick him out this time,” she said. “For him, to fit in, this is what it should be.”

Miles was never shown the first picture, and is delighted with the second. Link -via Arbroath

Children's Drawings of Furniture Turned into Real Furniture

furniture

We've previously seen artists turn children's drawings of toys and stuffed animals into the real things. Kingston University (UK) students Jack Beveridge and Joshua Lake followed in this theme by asking young children to draw chairs. Then Beveridge and Lake built what the children drew.

Do you see the chair at the top? The designer included a goldfish tank, so Beveridge and Lake did, too.

Refrigerator Bandit

Has this ever happened to you? If you have kids, you can reconstruct what led to this picture. A child wants that delicious dessert in the refrigerator. He is too short to reach it, because it was "put out of his reach." So he stands on the lower refrigerator shelves, which eventually collapse. An adult, hearing the crash, runs in from the other room and immediately takes a picture. This was posted by the young man's uncle, redditor moe2395. Link

15 Utterly Adorable Babies Cosplaying

We’ve already featured some of the geekiest baby costumes around, but let’s face it, it’s hard to have too many adorable babies in cute costumes. With that in mind, here are 15 more simply precious cosplaying babies.

Care Bear

Each Care Bear has a different power and Sarah James of Instructables’ little Care Bear has the power of cuteness. Just try not to fall on the floor when he starts sending waves of adorability your way. You can even learn to make your own adorable Care Bear baby costume thanks to Sarah.

Cabbage Patch Kid

What’s better than a baby doll? A baby that’s dressed like a baby doll, especially if it looks like one of the legendary Cabbage Patch Kids complete in the box. Debbie of Coolest Homemade Costumes made this amazing costume for her daughter-in-law, who originally only asked for a wig. Imagine how happy she was to see the whole package all together.

Marty McFly

It’s an eighties baby-costume extravaganza! In fact, I think the universe would explode with cuteness and time-warpiness if we got the baby Care Bear, Cabage Patch Kid and Marty McFly all in one room togethrt. Flickr user Goines even included the license plate OUTATIME on the back of this DeLorean push car.

Mouse Trap

I absolutely love baby costumes that incorporate the stroller or wagon that the little one will be cruising in. While Costume Works reader Michael made the whole thing himself, it would actually be pretty easy to do this on your own with a store-bought mouse costume, a large piece of wood (sand it smooth so your rodent doesn’t get scratched), a dryer vent tube, and a little paint.

In Jail

A baby in a prisoner costume is pretty darn cute no matter what, but add in a giant Monopoly square and a brother dressed like Uncle Pennybags and you’ve suddenly got a great costume that everyone can appreciate. According to Costume Works reader Rorie, the parent of the two boys, the older one, Simon, is simply obsessed with board games, especially Monopoly, and he hates it when his baby brother gets into his games. So for Halloween, he got revenge by throwing his brother in jail.
