Ten Cool Products Invented by Kids

Hart Cain of New Philadelphia, Ohio, pictured above, was thirteen years old in 2010. At the time, his sister was selling candles for a school fundraiser. Hart didn't like the girly scents of his sister's wares. It made him reflect on candle scents that would appeal to men. He went on to produce the candles, called "man-cans," which feature scents such as leather baseball mitt, gunpowder, freshly cut grass, bacon and pizza.

Hart's candles are also unique in that they are contained by soup cans, the soup from which he donates to soup kitchens. Thus far, this enterprising young man has donated 80,000 cans of soup to feed the disadvantaged.

Dad Gets Caught Singing To Baby, Adorable Shame Ensues

There is nothing wrong with being a sensitive and sweet man. Honestly, it is a nice change from the emotionless brutes that society seems to encourage. One night Tristen Combs heard her husband singing to the baby in the tub, and she just knew she needed to share it with the world.

Nice to see that there are still dads out there who know how important it is to actually take joy in those moments that so many take for granted. Also note, when he gets busted, his look of shame as he pulls the curtain closed is priceless.

You have nothing to be ashamed about, friend. Frankly, the world needs more guys like you.

This Is How Babies Used to Fly on Airplanes

(Photo: British Airways Speedbird Heritage Centre)

How do you transport a baby on a long airline flight? During the 1950s, engineers at the British Overseas Airways Corporation (what we now call British Airways), developed the "skycot." High Life, British Airways' in-flight magazine, tells us that parents would hold babies during takeoff and landing, but, while in the air, would place them in these hammocks clamped onto the overhead luggage racks.

A Gourmet Experience for Second Graders

(YouTube link)

The New York Times Magazine took six children from the second grade at P.S. 295 in Brooklyn to a restaurant. Not just any restaurant, though: they were treated to a seven-course tasting meal at Daniels, which runs $220 a head. Chef Daniel Boulud served them Smoked Paprika Cured Hamachi, Crispy Japanese Snapper, and Wagyu Beef Rib-Eye, among other dishes. These are Brooklyn kids, so they have restaurant experience, but none had been to such a fancy diner before. They are well-behaved, but they are also delightfully opinionated about their food. -via reddit

Baby Learns to Walk

(YouTube link)

Nick Turner had a camera set up in the family room to capture his daughter’s first steps. As you can guess, that plan meant he captured an awful lot of attempts and false steps before Lucy actually “became a biped.” He put those clips together to make a video of the process of learning to walk. And as any parent can tell you, once they start walking, they spend the next couple of decades trying to walk away from you. -via Viral Viral Videos

Moms Share The Craziest Things Their Kids Have Ever Said Or Done

Watching your kids grow up means being exposed to some pretty strange stuff, because even the nicest, sweetest and most well behaved kids are prone to bouts of nutty behavior.

They’re trying to figure out the world for themselves, and haven’t yet learned all the nuances of right and wrong, tactful and rude.

Comedians Shayna Ferm and Tracey Tee also happen to be moms, and they created a two woman live show called The Pump and Dump where they share their experiences in motherhood with their eager audience.

They invite audience members to share the strangest things their kids have ever done or said, and their hand written responses are comedy gold!

I guess becoming a parent is a great way to break in to the comedy biz, because the comedic moments write themselves when you have kids around.

The First Baby Ever Born from a Transplanted Uterus

(Photo: The Lancet)

3 years ago, I mentioned that researchers in Sweden were planning the world's first uterus transplant. This would have offered new options for women for whom fertility is a lost cause. According to Dr. Mats Brannstrom of the University of Gothenburg, their efforts have been fruitful. Brannstrom and his colleagues published an article in the medical journal The Lancet reporting on the first successful live birth from a transplanted uterus.

Last month, a 36-year old woman who received one of the transplanted uteri gave birth to a premature but healthy baby boy. She had been born without a uterus, but had healthy ovaries. A 61-year old friend of her family donated her uterus to the woman. 6 weeks after she gave birth, the woman had a period, which indicates that the uterus remains healthy. She could try for a second baby, but the AP reports that she's not considering that right now.

How Mystery Guitar Man Got a Baby

(YouTube link)

Congratulations to musicisn, animator, and YouTube star Mystery Guitar Man, also known as Joe Penna (previously at Neatorama) on the birth of his son Jonah Lane Penna! He and his wife made a pregnancy time-lapse video with a difference: this one has a plot, sort of. A lot of planning, work, and timing went into this video over ten months. They even moved to a new home during the shoot, and the new residents of their old apartment let them keep the camera and props set up in the garage to finish the video. He talks a little about how they did it here. -via Viral Viral Videos

Reporter Covering Missing Child Story Finds Missing Child

(Photo: Paul Fagan and Cameron Polom)

Paul Ezekial Fagan, a 10-year old boy in Tampa, Florida, vanished from his home last Thursday. Police searched the neighborhood on foot and in a helicopter while his frantic parents feared the worst.

Local news reporters drove into Paul's neighbhorood to report on the case. Among them was Cameron Polom of the local ABC station. At around 7 AM on Friday, Polom spotted a tired-looking child in some dense vegetation. The Today show describes the scene:

“He’s looking at me and I’m thinking, ‘Could this possibly be this kid? Is this really happening?’ It was a very surreal moment,” he told TODAY.com on Monday.

Polom, 29, said he called out to the boy and asked for his name. He then picked the boy up over the fence and walked him to nearby sheriff’s deputies.

Paul's family was overjoyed to see him back. The boy explained to them that he had left home because he needed some space from his younger brother.

There's Nothing Sweeter Than Babies In Halloween Costumes

Kids look awfully cute when they’re all dressed up and ready to go trick-or-treating, but there’s simply nothing cuter than a chubby cheeked baby wearing a Halloween costume.

Maybe it’s the fact that they’re too young to actually go out trick-or-treating, or perhaps it’s the fact that the parents get to choose the costume, and they always err on the side of cuteness.

Whatever the reason behind our love of babies in costume, nothing warms the heart quite like seeing a little rugrat all dressed up with no idea what lies in store for them on Halloween!
