Call it a sign of these tough economic times. Round-the-clock childcare is not only a necessity for many working parents, it is quickly becoming a reality.  Daycare facilities like ABC & Me Childcare are now are operating 24-hours a day and open weekends.

If you have never heard of a 24-hour daycare facility before you should really check out this fascinating video featuring ABC & Me Childcare.

Slim pickings here, too. The one time I needed after school daycare, there was only one place that stayed open late enough to accommodate my work shift. They worked 24 hours. And were closed down eventually because of multiple violations. Sigh.

The problem is that, at least where I live, if a mother is working third shift and has no other adult to stay with the children overnight (like a husband), then she probably can't afford childcare anyway.

We briefly had our eldest daughter in childcare about three years ago. Because I worked one shift per week that ended at 8 PM, this reduced the number of potential childcare facilities to two.

Two!

It really surprised me. Most facilities closed at 6 PM. Only two were open until after 8, and those two were 24-hour facilities.

They weren't bad, but I was surprised that there weren't more options.
