Wasteful Packaging to Blow Your Mind

This item could have easily been shipped in an envelope. How many times have you ordered a small item that was delivered in a large box with packing peanuts or bubble wrap just to take up the excess room? Was a large box all they had? Or was it a consequence of warehouse workers under stress, not allowed enough time to go get a proper size box? Either way, it just adds to our landfills in the end. This also happens in stores, when a small item must be packaged in a wastefull manner to thwart shoplifters. The subreddit called EgregiousPackaging collects examples that can make you scratch your head.

This one is baffling. The soda is in a can, added to a plastic tray, then covered in shrink wrap. Commenters tell us this is a kit for marinading meat sold in China. You put your meat in the provided plastic tray and pour the Coke over it. Okay, but you'd think that anyone making something that involved would already have a bowl or something at home to put it in. Something they wouldn't have to throw away.

I am always amused that someone orders a "sustainable" product online and then blames the store for wasteful packaging. The person ordering it takes that responsibility. If you do not want packaging, get it yourself IRL.

Individually wrapped jelly beans..... they are not for your private candy jar... they are designed for candy jars at stores information desks and the like, where a large amount of customers pass by and may take one of them with their hands. Packing is expensive and costs time and money... they won't do it if they wont have to... and the customer pays extra for the extra package... so if the customer would not pay they would not wrap.... that is from a different point of view it is fully legit.

Number 8: the single mask package is strange. But it seems to be a special offer for people that have forgotten to take their mask to the store. The package is only slightly more wasteful than a plastic bag. And it looks like being packed at the store for a makeshift packaging as the individually bagged masks are temporaly not available. The package rewuires too much rack spach and individual handling to be a standard pack. Aaaaannnddd would you buy an unwrapped Covid mask from the bargsin table? So under the presumed conditions... numer 8 seems fully legit.
