Apple Is Developing Augmented Reality That Will Beam Images Directly into Your Eyeballs

The common joke is that, eventually, advertisers will be able to buy space in your dreams to sell you stuff. We haven't arrived at that future yet, but we are making progress.

Apple Insider, a website that keeps up on the latest news about that corporation's products and services, notes that Apple recently received a patent for a product called "Apple Glass." It isn't simply a wearable augmented reality projector. It's a "direct retinal projector." This machine would use the human eyes themselves to experience the visual overlay.

So although it's not quite at the level of a holodeck on Star Trek, it is conceptually similar to the synaptic stimulator on the Star Trek:Voyager episode "Equinox."

This has too much potential for abuse. Imagine beaming images into someone's eyes while he/she is operating heavy equipment or controlling a vehicle - or luring somebody into harm's way. Fortunately, there are bound to be countermeasures.

Unfortunately tech companies (etc) regularly patent things not because they are possible or because they are working on them but for other reasons (eg: to profit if someone works it out, to block others from developing things, as wild "just in case we need it in 30 years", etc). Just registering a patent means almost nothing about the future chance of things happening. Because the patent system is broken.

As someone who works for an organic produce retailer just wanted to point out that even after organic produce reaches the store it must remain 100% separate from conventional items. Different sides of the cooler, different pallets. And on the shelf they cannot touch, they're usually on entirely different display or divided by plastic barriers. If an organic item touches a conventional one it can no longer be sold as organic. We've been known to peel off the produce stickers from OG lemons that fall onto CV apples and sell them with the CV lemons to lessen the loss.
