Can You Upload Your Mind & Live Forever?

At the pace our technological advancements are going, it will soon be possible to completely copy a human brain and save it digitally. But if your brain is digitally uploaded and saved, does that mean you are immortal? Would your brain be "you," or just a copy of you? For one thing, we cannot really address whether "consciousness" can be uploaded until we completely define consciousness. And we will not know whether that digital consciousness is actually the same as the person until we try it out. That will lead to questions of personality, existence, and soul, which are more complex than even copying a complete brain. What could possibly go wrong? Well, someone might accidentally delete you, or the power may go out. You might upload to 99% and get stuck. You know how that goes. Or it could be worse. The speculation presented here by Kurzgesagt is fascinating, but if the length of the video bothers you, you can skip the first and last minute. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Whether or not a precise duplicate of me could be conscious, or believe it was me, would not fundamentally affect the original "me". You could create a duplicate of me, and then destroy it, and I'd be none the wiser. So even if you could create a virtual me, it would no more make me "immortal" than having children does. There are people who might desire such a thing, or consider it somehow beneficial in a business or political context, but it's not the same as immortality for me.

I wouldn't want to live forever, especially if I can't walk around, travel etc... I never understood why anyone would want to freeze their body and come back years later when everything has changed.
After a set time period on this earth I believe most brains are tired and nerves are worn thin from all the living done before.

Being connected to your skin and blood and tissue and bones and everything else in your body is what develops consciousness, and makes it all worthwhile. Your consciousness separated from your physical body would either be impossible or it would completely freak out like a head surgically connected to the wrong body. Emotions, Pain, Suffering, Happiness - all this is just as important to the experience. Just as the gut has a direct connection to the brain, your emotions have a direct connection to your intelligence. So my conclusion is: To do it properly it would take an incredible amount of research and resources and maintenance. And even then it would never be quite the same. Also consider that most people you know, there's nothing worthwhile about them living for an extra 500 years. I mean think about the people who wait in line with you at walmart. Do they get their consciousness uploaded, or only rich people? How many billions would it take to make the perfect organic experience for 1 person? What would it be like it when you flipped the switch on? Would you still be there when they flipped the switch on, or would it just be a.i. repeating stuff you said from 1987? I duno.
