Europe has neighborhoods where the US has zoning laws. Buildings in many US cities and mid-size towns are highly divided by use, with apartments downtown, stores in shopping centers, industries in the industrial park, and single-family houses in vast neighborhoods and suburbs, where you must have a car in order to buy groceries, eat out, or socialize. -via Digg

I duno, advantages either way I guess. As a person that doesn't own a car, yes I like living in an urban area with plenty of walkability. But I also get the feeling that most americans who are raising families love driving and don't mind the zoning at all. I mean when you're raising kids you have to drive to everything anyway. But I have read from several credible sources that humans sitting in cars for long periods of time causing all sorts of health problems in the long run. And thats every american, every day. There's gotta be a fine balance somewhere.
