Things We Do That Are Confusing For Dogs

As humans, we do things that are, well, normal for us to do, like go outside to hang out with friends or work, put perfume, or wear clothes that change how we look. But for animals such as dogs, these actions can be seen as weird, confusing, or even threatening.

Take for example our love for hugs.

How humans use their forelimbs contrasts sharply with how dogs do. We may use them to carry large objects a dog would have to drag, but also to grasp each other and express affection.
Dogs grasp each other loosely when play-wrestling, and also when mating and fighting. Being pinned by another dog hinders a quick escape. How are puppies to know what a hug from a human means, when that behaviour from a dog might be threatening?

The Conversation lists 8 things that we do that make dogs confused. See them over at the site.

Indeed. I was expecting a list of inane or pointless things, but it's actually pretty good.

The hugging thing reminds me of a time a police dog bit a reporter on the face after the reporter put his arm around the dog's shoulders.

Pretty good list, altho I've run across dogs that very affectionate and liked things like hugging/cuddling. Dogs like humans are on a spectrum in terms of kindness for sure.

It's a "cake scoop". The makers of ice cream scoops, with their button to release the ice cream from their special spoon, thought that they could repeat their earlier success with a special fork that could release their piece of cake when they pressed the button as well.

This is a fork for extracting olives from an olive barrel. It has a convenient device for ejecting impaled olives from the tines. I'm surprised they still make these.

It's a s'more roasting fork. Just layer the ingredients, clamp it shut, then hold over the fire. It could use a longer handle though.

This is a Puritan courting fork from colonial New England. Using it, the happy couple could enjoy a meal together, while propriety was ensured by the sturdy central barrier.

Saw one at a flea market and asked Grandpa what it was. He said it was a separator. I asked how it worked. He said wait around a while and you'll see it separate some fool from his money.
