A man was sent more than 2500 illegal parking tickets back in 1986, and it all started when all he had wanted was a personalized license plate.
All Robert G. Barbour wanted were personalized license plates for his Datsun Z.
The sailing enthusiast put in a request for personalized plates that would read either "SAILING" or "BOATING." Although the California Department of Motor Vehicles form provided space for a third choice, he said he had none--and so he wrote "NO PLATE" on that line.
"NO PLATE" is exactly what his new plates read.
A few days later, dozens of overdue notices began arriving from all over the state. That's when Barbour says he realized that law enforcement officers were writing "no plate" on citations for illegally parked vehicles without license plates.
Seven years and 2,500 illegal parking notices later, he still wonders how two 6-by-12-inch plates could have caused him so much trouble.
Robert stood by his decision to keep the ‘No Plates’ Plate. The plate was original and he was adamant to find a way to keep them. Isn’t it funny how this unique plate made Robert famous? Anyhow, if you’re still wondering how he managed to face the brunt of such a huge amount of illegal parking tickets, head over to the LA Times.
