Tony's original prototypes for his superpowered iron suit were made out of various materials- plastic, ceramic, aluminum and even cardboard, before he settled on making them all out of wood. It was a cheap material, durable and malleable, but he really could have done without the two inch long splinters and the globs of sap he couldn't seem to scrub off his skin...
