after i filed my taxes this year,i received an envelope with the year 2012 written on the top in huge numbers. the whole thing looked just like another tax form. i was thinking i messed up somewhere and missed something. i open it just to find out it was just junk mail. it was about that they could lower my mortgage payments.

There's a science to this whole thing. Marketers have done extensive experiments to find out and optimize the "open rate" of mailed envelopes. If I remember correctly, plain white envelopes with nothing on them except the address of the recipient still works best.
