Baby Elephant Rescued from a Well

(Video Link)

Our little, er, large friend is just a baby, perhaps eight or nine months old. He fell into a well in Bundu, Jharkhand, India. The villagers went straight to work. After five hours of digging with heavy equipment, the baby elephant scrambled to safety. Hooray!

Amazing. I just read a children's book with an almost identical story, except it was a hippo in a well instead of an elephant. Book was called "It Will Take a Lot of Us to Lift a Hippopotamus." No kidding.

What humiliating day for the poor elephant! First he falls into a well and gets all yucky. Then he endures a group of humans gathered around, pointing and gawking at him for the next five hours. Eventually there is a way out, but just when he thinks he's home free, he finds out that the humans had place a huge backhoe that he hast to find some way to crawl out from under (without getting crushed). Then, when he finally gets out of that mess, all of the humans start screaming and chase him off into the woods.

I it wouldn't surprise me if he avoids people for the rest of his life.
