He Directed What?

Michael Moore is best known for his documentaries, in fact, only one of his movies doesn't fall under the title. Any ideas as to what movie that is?

If you said Canadian Bacon, you know your movies. I saw this yesterday when Zeon and I were watching the comedy and I have to say I was surprised to see that. He even makes a cameo in the movie as a red neck who is eager to go to war with the Canadians.

It got me thinking, do you guys know of any other movies who were directed or written by someone totally unexpected?

Star Trek: The Motion Picture, directed by the great Robert Wise. He was better known for West Side Story and The Sound of Music. (He did SciFi, too, most notably The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I think he's better known for his musicals.)

Documentarian Errol Morris also directed one fictional film, THE DARK WIND, with Lou Diamond Phillips, based on Tony Hillerman's novel featuring the Native American detective Officer Jim Chee. Which leads to the mesmerizingly bad sole feature directed by Johnny Depp, THE BRAVE. He's plays a solemn American Indian who takes out a contract on himself (with mobster Marlon Brando)to rescue his children from poverty. It has never been released in the States.

Jonah Hex was directed by Jimmy Hayward, a former Pixar animator who previously directed Horton Hears a Who.

The Longshots, about the first girl to play in Pop Warner starring Ice Cube, was directed by Fred Durst.

Roland Joffe, director of movies like The Mission, The Killing Fields, City of Joy and Vatel, directed Captivity, a horror film of the torture porn ilk.

But this might really be the year of "he directed what" with:

Martin Scorsese directed Hugo, a 3-D children's movie.

Roland Emmerich directed Anonymous a conspiracy period piece that doesn't involve the destruction of the world.

Francis Ford Coppola directed Twixt, live edit horror film with a soundtrack by Dan Deacon of all people.

Brad Bird directed the new Mission Impossible movie.

Madonna's directed a Julie & Julia type romance about famed Nazi sympathizer Wallis Simpson called W.E.

Ralph Fiennes directed a sword and sandals flick called Coriolanus.

Angelina Jolie directed a Bosnian war movie called In the Land of Blood and Honey.

James Bobin, whose directing previous credits include The Flight of the Conchords and Da Ali G Show, directed the New Muppets movie.

Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) directed the new Footloose movie.

Martin Campbell directed Green Lantern (not exactly a guy with sci-fi or comic book experience).

Rob Marshall directed the new Pirates movie because Gore Verbinski was busy directing the animated Lizard western, Rango, but both are kind of equally weird choices for those guys.

Michel Gondry directed The Green Hornet.

Kenneth Branagh directed Thor.

Joe Wright directed Hanna.

Kevin Smith directed Red State.

Oh and let's not forget Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters) finishing his work up on Twilight this year with the second part of New Moon.
