I read somewhere that he was able to release it back into the wild and that it still comes to visit him.

I love hummingbirds and was sad that I had to take down most of my hummingbird feeders after I had to rescue two hummies from the family cat's jaws.

I wonder if it was ever successfully re-released, it seems to have formed a bond with the boy.

In the United States it is against the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 to trap, band, hold, harass, or control any hummingbird or any part of the hummingbird, nest, or egg.

Just an FYI, it'd suck to run into an overzealous Fish and Wildlide office and get a $20K fine. You can request a permit however.
