I did this a couple weeks ago. The problem is that they send you something that's worth 10 bucks to someone... just not necessarily you.

I got a Christmas pin that I wouldn't have paid 5 bucks for. The price tag on the bottom of the box it came in said $20, so apparently it's worth that much to someone...

A woman on a message board I frequent got an ipod. Shuffle maybe? I know it was the smaller cheaper model. Anwho, it's more for fun - to see if you get something cool or a white elephant

Yep, I'm probably a sucker, but when I saw this yesterday on MentalFloss, I thought, what the heck and I clicked to receive an item. We'll see. It said 7 days. It's really dangerous for me to troll the Internet late in the day when I'm particularly bored....

This sounds like fun until you realize that in order for them to have things like iPods and designer clothes, most things will have to be worth a lot less than $10. Unless the proprietors are running this as a charity.

I just bought one and I instantly regret it. I figured 10 bucks is nothing and it would have just went to food I'd buy on a whim... But after reading the reviews almost all of them give a positive rating and say something along the lines of, "really like the idea, but the product was worthless."

But hey maybe I'll be one of the four people that gets something of value, or at least something interesting or rare.

It seems like an internet version of a white elephant raffle... except the proceeds don't go to charity or a good cause, just to the proprietors. I'm still tempted to try it out though.

i thought of doing this on ebay a while ago.....you bid on what may or may not be in the box. i didn't want to screw with all my positive feedbacks though.

This is indeed tempting. I won't get my hopes up for the fancy items, but I've read dozens of things other people got and some of them really are just crap dollar store stuff. I think the surprise might be worth $5, but the other $5 would have to be the item.

I personally prefer the free information grab bag of neatorama.

The Something Store would be a good idea if EVERYTHING was handmade, or had character to it. Instead, they're just widely available (cheap, for the most part) products from mass market retailers.

i went ahead and bought THREE somethings!
the idea is absurd and i'm just pathetically curious.
here's hoping it's somethings i LOVE or something godawful. whatever they are i'll be back to let you know!

I disagree with this completely. Who wants some homemade kitschy crap? If I wanted that, I'd just go to one of those "street fairs" that pop up every summer.

Your article makes it seem much more peppy and intriguing than it actually is. After ordering 3 somethings, received items you could find at the 99c store. (Art coloring kit, tool set, cheap junk bracelet). Ugh….

To make it a bit more of a surprise, my friend and I each ordered a something for each other... that way, neither of us feel quite like we wasted any money, but got each other a present. Neither of us are getting our hopes up... we just look forward to being pleasantly surprised... who cares if it's junk... it's something you sign on for when you buy a something.

This is a rip-off - don't waste your money! I ordered 3 items, figuring at least one would be nice. It's all a bunch of crap! I should have known better!

I just ordered one for my girlfriend, and she got luggage tags. Neither one of us even Flies, let alone the fact that luggage tags are about a Zero on a scale of 1-10 in terms of fun factor. I won't be ordering again. Above posters are right- they show the best of the best items that they have sent to people, and probably just the best of the best comments are shown are their website. I rate them a Thumbs Down, use your 10 bucks to score a Cool Something on your favorite big auction website ;)

This is a real rip-off, should have know. I ordered 2 things thinking I could use it for a gift exchange at my office I got a pair of plastic earrings and a cheap money clip straight from China, about $1.50 worth of junk I'd guess.

If you're hoping for something neat or quirky I don't think this is the place.

I got my 3 somethings yesterday--a week and a half after ordering...i got a cool pair of earrings...a thermometer/date calendar/weather station thingy...and a broken lighter.......I am just upset with the lighter. I didn't get any communication from the store...just paypal...kind of worrying, spoiled surprise a little. I might do this again...but not often...only the earrings were worth ten dollars...
