The Zoomable Van Gogh

Posted by Alex in Art, Pictures, Video Clips on January 4, 2012 at 1:40 pm

What's so special about this print of Vincent van Gogh by artist Phil Hansen?

Just zoom in a bit ...

... a bit more and you'll start seeing some letters ...

... and finally, a story:

Phil asked his viewers about an experience that shocked them, and wrote over 1,000 of such stories with sharpie to create the image of Van Gogh.

The making of video clip is amazing:

A Rose for Norway

Posted by Miss Cellania in Photography on July 31, 2011 at 6:34 am

People in Norway are leaving many flowers as memorials to the 77 people killed in the July 22 attacks. The Norwegian news outlet Dagbladet is compiling photographs of memorial flowers to add to this mosaic. It already has 2370 photographs, and submissions are still being accepted. At the site, you can zoom in to see each individual photograph. Link (English translation) -via Dark Roasted Blend

Hyperphotos

Posted by Miss Cellania in Photography, Pictures on April 6, 2011 at 4:43 am

Jean-François Rauzier makes huge high-resolution pictures with amazing attention to detail. Hyperphotos are his way of combining “infinitely big and infinitely small things in one same image.”

He found his way by juxtaposing, duplicating, twisting images with Photoshop, making it possible for him to reproduce human vision more accurately. This way, he generated a genuine numerical puzzle, in which the pieces, cut out, “drawn again”, come up along on top of the imagination of the artist.
From this technique is issued numerous fascinating and unusual details on which the spectator can dwell on.

For example, the picture here has a lot of people in it. At the site, you can zoom in and see them clear as daylight. Link -via J-Walk Blog

Tropical Island Infinite Photo

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Photography, Pictures on March 2, 2011 at 6:35 am

A couple of years ago we posted about an infinite photo called As Seen on Earth. National Geographic has a new infinite photo project called Tropical Island. At the link, you can select a piece of the image and click to zoom in on more images, and then click again to zoom in to yet more! You’ll also find information about the creatures pictured. The images are of the life forms of the beautiful South Pacific island of Mo‘orea. Link -via Metafilter

Gigagalaxy Zoom

Posted by Johnny Cat in Science & Tech on October 1, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Guisard_sThis is what I ended up with after just a minute of playing around with Gigagalaxy Zoom, a project by the European Southern Observatory.  Start with the Milky Way galaxy as seen by the naked eye, zoom into a section of it, then zoom to the next stage!  There are lots and lots of variations, and cool nebulas to explore!
