In the non-fictional world, our world, Marvel is taking the position that mutants are not humans at all. But this isn’t an ideological or a moral stance. Instead, it is a financial one. Toys manufactured in other countries and imported into the US are subject to taxes, but those taxes are lower if the toys represent non-human characters. That has led to Marvel lawyers arguing that an action figure representing, say, Wolverine, is actually “representing animals or other non-human creatures (for example, robots and monsters).”

He became increasingly feral as time went on just for something to do, despite that being the exact opposite of what happens when you hang around with people all the time. His one glorious moment came when a squad of “Warpies” assumed his sound-mimicking powers were no threat because they’d never seen Police Academy. His character was such an unemployable failure even in the X-community that his “happy ending” was finding and moving back in with his parents.

Well, to be fair, comics characters and Star Trek have collided in the past, often with bizarre results.  I’m not quite sure why they haven’t quite clicked in the past, other than that great catchall that explains away most of the “seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time’ pop culture atrocities:it was the ’90s.

Comics and Star Trek should be two great tastes that taste great together, and in that spirit the folks at Comics Should Be Good issued a challenge to their artistically inclined readers: draw us some comics/Star Trek team-ups!  The results, this time around, were fairly awesome.

io9 has a gallery of 1988-2000 arcade games like Superman, Spiderman, and more. The only one I remember is the 1992 X-Men 6-player monster machine.

If you were sentient during the early 1990s, chances are you (and five of your closest friends) wasted an afternoon at this game’s massive cabinet. Not only was Konami’s X-Men a hoot to play, it also provided a hilariously idiosyncratic take on Marvel’s favorite mutants. For example, Wolverine spoke with an Australian accent, Colossus had a spark attack, Juggernaut carried a bazooka, and Magneto’s broken English is the stuff of legends (see: “WELCOME TO DIE,” “I AM MAGNETO MASTER OF MAGNET,” “KILL YOU YOU ARE DEAD,” “COME X-CHICKEN”).
