15 Romantic Records Perfect For Valentine’s Day

Posted by Jill Harness in Holiday, Society & Culture, World Records on February 13, 2012 at 5:13 am

Whether or not you’re in a relationship, it’s still pretty easy to get swept away in the romantic spirit of Valentine’s Day. In honor of the holiday, let’s take a look at some of the most romantic world records ever achieved.

Longest Kiss

(Video Link)

I don’t know about you guys, but I would need a serious Chap Stick infusion after kissing someone for 46 and a half hours. The couple, Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat, was part of a contest held in Thailand in 2011, which led to seven couples breaking the existing record of 32 hours that was set back in 2009.

 Longest Underwater Kiss

It takes two people who can both hold their breath for a long while to break this record, which is why it is so impressive that Italians Michele Fucarino and Elisa Lazzarini were able to hold their breath while kissing for 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

Longest Underwater Mouth-to-Mouth Kiss

(Video Link)

While the Italian couple may have set the record for longest underwater kiss without breathing, Antonio de la Rosa Suarez holds a different but equally impressive record for kissing underwater. In his case, two women took turns kissing him while passing air to him. He stayed down there for 7 minutes, which seems like a relatively short record given that he was allowed to breathe during the process. Maybe one of you guys could take a crack at this one.

Most Expensive Kiss

Love Sharon Stone? Not as much as Joni Rimm apparently. Rimm actually shelled out $50,000 for one kiss with the actress, who offered up a lick-smacking session as part of a charity auction supporting Project Angel Foods, a charity dedicated to providing free meals for people with HIV and AIDS.

Most Simultaneous Underwater Marriages

As if having a giant wedding ceremony wasn’t romantic enough, the fact that 34 couples opted to exchange wedding vows underwater on Valentine’s Day makes this one sweet occasion, even if kissing the bride 33 feet underwater isn’t exactly an easy proposition.

Longest Hug

(Video Link)

It seems strange, but the world’s longest hug was actually almost a full day shorter than the world’s longest kiss. At only 24 hours and 33 minutes, it seems that this record, held by Ron O’Neil and Theresa Kerr, is just begging to be broken –so if you want to get in the book, better start locking arms now.

6 Animals That Lived Unbelievably Long Lives

Posted by Jill Harness in Animals & Pets, Living, World Records on February 3, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Is giving a cow whiskey the secret to ensuring it will live a long healthy life? It might sound silly, but if Bertha, the world’s longest-living cow had a few shots every year before staring in the St. Patrick’s Day parade, then who knows, maybe it helps. Interestingly, Bertha also holds the record for most calves birthed by one cow.

Read about more long-living animals over at Mental Floss.

Wanna get your MMO romance on and help set a new world record? Well, if you happen to play RIFT, then get married in the game on Valentine’s Day and you can help them set a Guinness record for most virtual marriages in a 24 hour period. Personally, the fact that you can incorporate a corgi into your virtual wedding is a huge selling point for me.

The World’s Largest Lightsaber Fight

Posted by Jill Harness in Entertainment, Science Fiction, Society & Culture, Toys, World Records on September 27, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Ordinarily, world record attempts at group activities seem boring to me, but the world’s largest lightsaber fight, now that sounds pretty darn fun! The most recent attempt to break the record took place at Washington Square Park, New York City last Saturday. While the record hasn’t been confirmed yet, there were at least 1000 people in attendance, so it sounds like the battle has a good chance of making it into the record books.

Fizz Girl is the world’s shortest cat and while the video doesn’t show nearly enough of her corgi-like proportions, she is simply adorable.

10 Records That Really Shouldn’t Exist

Posted by Jill Harness in Society & Culture, World Records on August 16, 2011 at 12:20 am

While this picture is already enough for most people to realize this is something no one should ever do,the fact that there is actually a record for most rattlesnakes held in the mouth at one time is just plain wrong. For more bizarre records, check out this great article over at All That is Interesting.

The World’s Youngest…

Posted by Jill Harness in Baby & Kids, Living, Society & Culture, Sports, World Records on August 5, 2011 at 1:30 am

Oddee has a great article featuring the World’s Youngest record holders for a variety of titles. While they range from shocking (the world’s youngest grandmother) to fascinating (the world’s youngest CEO). Perhaps the cutest though is the world’s youngest surfer:

Jaylan Amor is only two years old, but is already surfing the waves outside of Brisbane, Australia, and has secured multiple endorsements from surf shops. To catch a wave, his dad paddles him out to sea, then the two year old hops and rides the waves back into shore. Mr Amor isn’t worried if Jaylan falls, as the tike just swims back to his board and waits for daddy to help him back up.

16 Lb Baby Might Be The World’s Largest

Posted by Jill Harness in Baby & Kids, Living, Society & Culture, World Records on July 11, 2011 at 2:39 am

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to give birth to a 16 pound baby, even if it was through a caesarian. On top of every thing else, you’d have to worry about trying to find clothes for him. Janet Johnson, who just gave birth to a son that might be the world’s largest said she’s going to have to return all the clothes she already bought for him since he’s already the size of most 3 month olds.

The World’s Largest Burger

Posted by Jill Harness in Food & Drink, Living, World Records on July 5, 2011 at 11:47 pm

It seems every few years someone has topped this record again, but if you think hamburgers are an American specialty, then you’ll be happy to know the U.S. reclaimed the title from the Canadians recently. The burger is 777 pounds and contains 590 pounds of beef. Obesity epidemic, eat your heart out…wait.

Chinese Bullet Train Sets New Speed Record

Posted by John Farrier in Auto & Transportation, Living on September 29, 2010 at 11:50 am

A commuter train between Shanghai and Hangzhou set a new speed record yesterday. It reached 258.86 MPH during its journey:

“The new record of 416.6 km per hour shows that China has achieved a new milestone in high-speed train technologies,” Zhang Shuguang, deputy chief engineer of the Ministry of Railways, was quoted as saying.

The rail service has been largely unsuccessful in attracting customers due to high ticket prices. Its managers hope that this new record will counteract that problem.

An Impressive Collection of World Records

Posted by Minnesotastan in World Records on March 20, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Boston.com’s The Big Picture has assembled about 30 photographs of people achieving or attempting to set Guiness World Records.  Pictured above is He Pingping, who until his death this past week was the world’s shortest man (2 feet 5 inches), standing next to Sultan Kosen (8 feet 1 inch) of Turkey.

Other records depicted at the link include the world’s largest cheesecake, largest meatball and largest plate of hummus, and the tallest dog (and horse), and the biggest Pokemon collection, and many more.  Those interested in such phenomena are reminded that Neatorama has a subcategory of posts devoted to world records.

Buffalo Sets World Record for Largest Ice Maze

Posted by Queuebot in World Records on February 28, 2010 at 11:49 pm

All it took was fifty volunteers in Buffalo, NY to construct the world’s largest ice maze for the 2010 Buffalo Powder Keg Winter Festival. Measuring 12,855.68 square feet, the new Guinness World Record maze features glowing blue lights and a giant Buffalo (the animal) at its center.

It breaks the old world record for an ice maze set in 2005 when the Pontiac Ice Maze was constructed during a Toronto festival using 1,940 blocks of ice and measuring 8,280 square feet.

It also was done at a fraction of the cost.

When organizers of the Buffalo festival decided to go for the record, they found out the Toronto maze cost more than $300,000.

But Buffalo was able to pull of the feat thanks to donations and volunteers.

World’s Tallest Horse?

Posted by Jill Harness in Animals & Pets, World Records on October 4, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Poe the Clydesdale is an impressive 6′ 8″ tall and his owner, Shereen Thomspon, is seeking to have him admitted into the Guinness Book of World Records. Poe weighs over 3,000 pounds and stands at 80.8 inches high. The current record holder is shorter by a mere .8 inches.

The giant horse eats 10 pounds of grain and drinks 75 gallons of water per day. “He is extremely popular, but his size always means people keep a cautious distance from him — although they shouldn’t, as he is a real puppy,” Thompson said.

Full Recovery for Girl with Two Hearts

Posted by Queuebot in World Records on July 14, 2009 at 10:46 am

In 1995, two-year-old Hannah Clark of Mountain Ash, Wales suffered from cardiomyopathy and received a donor heart, which was "piggybacked" onto her original heart and took over its function. For ten years, the donor heart beat in Hannah’s chest, but she was developing tumors and could not continue the immunosuppressive drugs transplant patients must take to counter organ rejection. Since Hannah still had her original heart, doctors decided to disconnect the donor heart. After ten years of not working, her original heart took over pumping blood and functions without medication. Three years later, Hannah is completely recovered.

Professor Peter Weissberg, of the British Heart Foundation, said cardiologists have long wondered whether a heart which is failing because of cardiomyopathy might be able to recover if rested.

“This seems to be exactly what has happened in Hannah’s case in which the donor heart allowed her own heart to take a rest and recover.

“This is an exciting discovery since it proves that, in some instances, a weakened heart has the capacity to recover – if it can be helped.”

The World Record For Talking Too Much

Posted by Jill Harness in Everything Else, World Records on January 24, 2009 at 1:01 pm

My friends sometimes say I have a problem with never shutting up. I bet if they met Lluis Colet, they might change their tune. In 2004, Colet was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for longest speech. His 2004 speech lasted 48 hours. Since then, the record was beaten, so Colet won it again, this time by talking for an amazing 124 hours. In the name of all people who talk too much, my hat is off to you Lluis.
