Ever since Bethesda Studios released the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Toolkit, which allows users to freely modify their gaming experience, things have been getting a little weird.

From tiny Nords to Frostbite Spiders that resemble a deformed Spider Man to swords lit up like light sabers, gamers have been going to town with the toolkit, making the world of Elder Scrolls a much more colorful place.

Recently, Bethesda Studios teamed up with Valve, the makers of the Portal video game series, to celebrate the release of the Toolkit by introducing the cute little Space Core robot from Portal 2 as a time traveling visitor. But what does the little guy do, besides take up space in your inventory?

My friends all laugh at me, because whenever I drive anywhere, the first song playing from my iPod is generally from a video game or movie soundtrack. I’m a product of my environment, and my musical tastes are heavily influenced by movies, trailers, tv shows and games, and as such I have “terrible” taste in music according to everyone else. So be it.

Of course, taste in music varies, so others contributed suggestions in the comments. I thought of “Baba Yetu” from Civilization IV, the main theme from The Legend of Zelda, and of course, Tetris, but then I’m no gamer, so the list is all new to me. Being as we’re well into the month of January, 2012 I figured it was a good time to look back at 2011 and fondly remember what a strange year it was for video games.

The offbeat games that made it on IGN’s list feature such awkward elements as: a baby that must fight for his life in a dungeon filled with his mutated siblings, a grindhouse style game with phallic shaped weaponry, a game that all too faithfully replicates a real life romantic relationship, and a side scrolling MMO in which you can milk butterflies, among others.

If the games produced in 2012 progress even further with the strangeness, it’s gonna be a good year for those of us who enjoy games that are weird and wild!

Wanna get your MMO romance on and help set a new world record? Well, if you happen to play RIFT, then get married in the game on Valentine’s Day and you can help them set a Guinness record for most virtual marriages in a 24 hour period. Personally, the fact that you can incorporate a corgi into your virtual wedding is a huge selling point for me.

If you’re releasing advanced copies of your new video game, you probably want to make sure everything is perfect, lest the reviewers critique you for something that won’t even be in the final version of the game. Of course, while you’re probably focusing most of your energy on the game itself, it’s generally a good idea to at least take a good look at the box art and spelling, lest you release “revelaitons” to the world.

It’s a crazy concept, but Pac-Man and  Middle Aged Mega Man are now part of fighting game history thanks to the upcoming release Street Fighter X Tekken! And, while Mega Man is fat and old in this game, and Pac-Man is piloting some clunky robotic body armor instead of simply chomping down on the opposition, I think they still make a colorful addition to the fighting game genre.

Combining a crazy assortment of characters into a fighting game worked for Super Smash Bros., so this doesn’t seem so far fetched to me. What does seem like a stretch, however, is the idea of a Pac person battling through a tournament full of fierce opponents without the aid of Power Pellets!

Good news everyone! A Fallout MMO is now on its way, thanks to the lawsuit between Bethesda and Interplay being settled for $2 million dollars.

Bethesda has been waiting to get to work on the Fallout online game for over five years now, so I’m sure it will become a reality sooner rather than later, and I think it would offer a refreshing change from the standard fantasy and sci-fi titles which currently dominate the market.

The future of portable gaming looks pretty sweet, thanks to Razer’s newest innovation Project Fiona, which looks like a tablet but has a gaming PC worth of power under the hood.

With Intel’s Core i7 processors, both game controllers and a touch screen, and no issues with compatibility when running PC games (it will come with Windows 8 installed), this isn’t just a tablet-it’s a way to take your favorite PC games with you wherever you go, and have them look as good as they do on your monitor at home.

Now, the fact that the projected launch price is “under $1,000″ may make this unit too pricey for all but the wealthiest and most diehard gamers, but to me it’s all about what this unit represents-the future of portable gaming, and it’s looking good!

If you love playing old school games via emulators, yet you have a stack of Sega Genesis and/or Super Nintendo cartridges just sitting around gathering dust, then you might want to look into purchasing a Retrode-a USB device that allows you to play your cartridge games through any emulator, and has ports for all your old controllers.

So, you get that old school “blow on the cartridge before you slot it in” feeling, without fretting over how jacked up your old console has become over the years. Retro gamer completists rejoice!

One of the great things about this hi-tech world we live in is the fact that most software applications have a multitude of other uses that have yet to be discovered, and even the programmers that created the software don’t know the full extent of what their software can do.

Case in point-this mod of SwapNote, a Nintendo 3DS chatting program that was modded by game design student Ben Gray and turned into a fully customizable text based roleplaying game.

Ben’s hacked version is so cool that each session can be custom created, and Ben even created a Dungeon Master template, to help with encounters and map creation. Dungeons and Dragons for the portable gaming crowd, now that’s an innovation I can get behind!

Have you ever heard of a game called Takeshi’s Challenge? Probably not, since this game from 1986 has only been available for the Famicon (Japan’s NES), and all the in-game text is in Japanese, up until now.

Dedicated retro game enthusiast and ROM modder King Mike has finally cracked this bad boy wide open, translating the text to English and making the game available as a ROM for NES emulators.

Takeshi’s Challenge is famous for featuring some of the most ridiculously hard challenges ever found in a video game, like a boss who is rumored to take over 20,000 hits to defeat, and is thought to be creator Takeshi Kitano’s prank against gamers.

So, if you like your video games to be impossibly challenging, and you enjoy chucking game controllers against the wall in frustration, then Takeshi’s Challenge is the game for you! Personally, I no longer have any controllers to spare, so I think I’ll watch somebody else play this one.

This trailer for the upcoming video game release Kiki Trick will have you wondering just WTF is going on. The game is from the makers of Wario Ware, which is full of crazy moments and utter nonsense, so the fact that this trailer is so off the wall is not surprising.

What is a surprise, however, is the fact that this trailer somehow represents actual gameplay footage! What in the world is this game going to make you do, cure a stomach ache by taking antacids, or telling a scary story while huddled around a candle?

The Kiki Trick team sure has stepped up the lunacy scale, and even Japanese gamers are scratching their heads on this one. Enjoy two minutes of madness, Japanese gamer style.

If you’ve ever wondered how the events that take place in all of the Legend of Zelda video games fit together in the history of Hyrule, you need to check out this official timeline.

Part of a new Zelda art book entitled Hyrule Historia, this timeline proves that there is a cohesive plot unfolding in the games, a plot which is following a set path, and which sometimes strays off into the multiverse zone, depending on the outcome of certain scenarios and whether Link is defeated or victorious in his battle against dark forces.

If you’re interested, you can see more of this comprehensive timeline at the link below, as well as a 23 minute long video which shows the art book in all it’s beautifully illustrated glory. It’s good to know that someone can make sense of all that has happened to Link since his early days on the NES!

The world created by Bethesda Studios for their Elder Scrolls video game series is so fully realized, so full of details other game companies would have left out of such a massive project, that now people have taken to making food in real life via the recipes found in books you can read in-game.

The culinary creatives behind this project, called Feast of Fiction, have revealed their first Skyrim inspired recipe-Sunlight Souffle. And, much like the recipes inspired by the food in the Game of Thrones series that people are making nowadays, the end results look interesting and delicious. I can’t wait to see what kind of recipes they discover, and bring to life, next!
