I tend to liken horse_ebooks to some wacky public access show you might have watched in college. There’s no comedic motive — as with the weirdo doing a foreign events call-in show at 3:00 in the morning, there’s no irony — but it doesn’t carry that guilt of mockery: you are not, and couldn’t be, making fun of Horse_ebooks. If anything, it’s making fun of you.

Whatever the appeal — explication does more harm than good — it’s stuck with people. Someone started a genuinely good horse_ebooks fanfiction site. There’s Horse_ecomics, which posts comics inspired by the account’s Tweets, and a litany of smaller tributes: people have had ordered framed images of the account’s avatar, turned Tweets into mug inscriptions (“Swallow that garbage”), and renamed their Twitter accounts in it honor.

Chester is a spunky little stray who’s always looking for fun. Even if it means knocking a few things off my desk as I write this article. The only problem is, when my wife goes in to work, she misses her new cat and always wants to know his whereabouts.

She used to ask me for updates, but after a while I realized that I needed to make something that would take me out of the loop, and let the cat communicate with my wife directly via twitter.com. I needed a Twittering cat toy. And that’s how Kitty Twitty came to fruition, after some basic soldering and crafting with just a few parts.

I must be the only person on Twitter who calls their location by its real name. A recent study by InboxQ revealed that 66% of Tweeters have either made up a location entirely (“John Malkovich’s brain”) or use clever nicknames for their cities. The latter is what you’ll find represented in this “America According to Twitter” map. That’s it. I’m now considering my location “Hartford of the West.” It doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Paris of the Plains,” but it’s a start.

You thought you left behind popularity contests when you graduated high school, right? Think again. The World’s Most Exclusive Website lets you “in” to their virtual club on levels based on your number of followers on Twitter.

I didn’t even get through the front door because I don’t have a verified account. “Verified Twitter accounts are reserved for the famous or otherwise socially significant,” the site informed me, and redirected me to a “less discriminating” site – Olive Garden.

To get past the first page, you need to have a verified account, obviously.
The second page requires 5,000 followers. It also tells you who else has been able to access that level so far, so you can compare your popularity. You know, just for that added kick in the gut. (“What do you mean @BronxZoosCobra has more followers than me?”)
Door three requires 25,000 followers.
You’re stopped at Door four unless 100,000 people care about your Tweets.
The fifth entrance means you need to have half a million followers to proceed through.
The secret entrance of door six must have made Ryan Seacrest (who posted photos of his progress) really excited that he has more than a million people hanging on his every Tweet.
But the stone door frame on the seventh page is where he got stopped for lacking the required five million followers.

If you’re not a celebrity, don’t worry… apparently the terribly exclusive site is also terribly easy to hack. You can view every room (even the ones no one has accessed yet) right here without so much as ever Tweeting a single character.

France-based telecom company Orange may pick up your Tweet and give it the movie treatment, making it sound like your lazy summer by the pool should actually involve car chases and harrowing escapes from death. In a move based on legislation  from 1992 that decrees mentioning services by name is a form of advertising, use of the words “Facebook” and “Twitter” will not be allowed on French radio or television, unless part of a news story. France’s Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA) says the reason for the ban is to avoid giving the American social networking giants an edge over smaller sites.

Though the move does not restrict use of the Facebook and Twitter sites in any way, critics of the legislation argue that banning mention of Facebook and Twitter will confuse the public. “Like us on our social networking site” just doesn’t have the same clarity as “Like us on Facebook.”
