Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, he has used a motley mix of materials (old typewriters, formed brass and steel, leather and quartz crystals) to put together a contraption that you wouldn’t have envisaged even in your wildest dreams – a gigantic eye popping out from the iPod controller section, and a crystal ball (?) replacing the comparably delectable screen; all resting on a steampunk victrola base with a blaring horn (we certainly hope there are no eerie tunes played for the additional effect).  Good news, though. It plays like your regular iPod so you can handpick your own tunes.

Sean Michael Ragan of Make magazine declares that with this video by inventor Patrick Brawley, steampunk has ‘jumped the shark’:

These steampunk Ghostbusters costumes are really inventive and visually interesting. Definately click on the link and take a look at all the pics because the old-styled ghosts accompanying them are also super cool.

Well then, let me introduce you to The League of S.T.E.A.M. (Supernatural Troublesome Ectoplasmic Apparitional Management) — otherwise known as Steampunk Ghostbusters, who, according to their webpage, are “taking the 1984 back to 1884.”

This week is Custom Con 22, where toy customizers get to show off their latest creations. So far, my favorites are Luke Porter’s set of Psycho Minimates. Other particularly strong entries are Sillof’s Victorian Avengers and action figures based on the movies of Terry Gilliam.

Today, the question of which is the most awesome steampunk gear has been conclusively answered: Behold the Steampunk Hawkman flying helmet by deviantART user brucethelesser.

Costuming Tip: Look closely at the crest feathers. When any decent light falls on them they look like shards of glass. To achieve this affect back paint thin cheap plastic (microscope slides) with translucent paint and metallic pigments and stick them together. you now have your shards of bottle glass and the paint can’t flake off since there sandwiched between two layers of plastic. Additionally there is no danger of shattered glass on the floor if the "feathers" get hit.

The mask is made of wonderflex, a themo-formable plastic.

French Performance Art outfit La Machine unveiled this 3 million dollar steampunk spider, La Princesse, as part of the City of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Over a four day period, La Princesse – in search of a nest – climbed walls, stalked the streets and sprayed unwary citizens.  This huge construction (here seen in some wonderful pictures) was deemed a huge success – but possibly not by any resident arachnaphobes.

This is in fact a massive thirty six tonne hydraulic spider scaling the side of a city block in Liverpool, England. The city is of course best known for The Beatles. However, during its time as the European City of Culture visitors to one of its main railway stations, Lime Street, could have been forgiven for thinking that the city had been invaded by a different type of insect altogether.

Built for the 2008 Jersey City Artists Studio Tour by Mark Dalzell, the Steampunk guitar, Organum Insolitus features a television with Fresnel lens magnifier, onboard phaser, an amplifier and uses clockwork gears, hand hammered brass, cloth wire and wood for its making. The freakin’ guitar can also be attached to an external amp via a standard ¼-inch cable, setting up the beastly guitar as game to steam some endless music.

All the items by Curious Inventions of Dr. Roberts are superbly hand crafted in the Steampunk Style using new, recycled and found objects. The technology is reminiscent of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Haruo Suekichi is a Japanese artist who specializes in making wonderful steampunk watches. In the past 12 years, Haruo has made some 7,000 watches – he started out selling them in the flea market, but now his watches are very collectible.

Chief Mag has an interview with the master watchmaker, who recounted an interesting tale of how he got the whole idea because he wanted to design a watch for a one-armed man:

at the flea market, a one-armed man came up to me. And he said to me, well, with only my left arm, I can’t put on a watch. Wow, I thought, he’s right…I wonder if I could make a watch like that? So I made – and you can see one upstairs in the showcase – I made a watch that you put your wrist in it and it shuts around your wrist.

The latest Cabinet of Curiosities blog carnival brings together all sorts of Steampunk wonders starting with the famous steam-powered wheelchair from Wild Wild West, the prop design one of the few great things about the film. Another such wheelchair is said to appear in the Weird West film Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western: Django, alongside mini-guns and Quentin Tarantino sporting a very odd accent

It seems a pity there aren’t more in real-life, which goes to underline how much there is left for people to give a good Steampunk mod to. After all we have Pimp My Wheelchair, and numerous examples, we just need to apply a dash of retro-chic.

Stephane Halleux’s sculptures (for more, click “chaises” in the menu of their site) certainly show there is a world of potential on the design front. We even have steam-powered prosthetics – we just need to make them look the part.

Found at the Art of AlexCF blog: a fantastic Martian Botanical Device steampunk, a state-of-the-art "botanical preservation device that contains the exact mixture of chemicals present in the martian atmosphere", so Victorian-era (space) explorers can keep alive specimens of carnivorous plants from the Red Planet.
