In the Star Wars universe, Tattooine is the home planet of the Skywalker family, but it looks like Tunisia because that’s where many of the exterior shots were filmed. In fact, Tatooine got its name from the town of Tataouine in Tunisia. A lot of the buildings and landscapes you know from the films look pretty much the same today, and many of them welcome tourists. This photo is of a fisherman’s hut which was used as the home of an old hermit named Ben Kenobi. Read about more of these Tunisians locations at LosApos. Link -via reddit

French photographer Cedric Delsaux sees a different setting for the Star Wars saga when he looks through the lens-a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of ruined buildings and bleak landscapes.

It’s the kind of place that seems perfect for devotees of the Dark Side, a world which leaves most droids feeling a bit lost. Here’s a bit on how this photo series came to be:

In his series ‘The Dark Lens’, Delsaux first set out to highlight the decay of the post-apocalyptic modern world, but found the landscapes too plain.

That was when he incorporated notable scenes and characters from Star Wars, with the help of CGI maestro Pierrick Gueneugue, bringing to life two distant worlds.

We’ve featured the works of Cedric Delsaux here on Neatorama  over the years (Link and Link), and now he’s back because his series The Dark Lens has been put together in a book, which features a forward by George Lucas (link).

What an interesting way to put a spin on a sub-genre and sci-fi series which are in danger of becoming an artistic cliche. And I quite like the idea of Darth Vader lording over the reconstruction of a massive skyscraper (Death Star Towers, maybe?), while Jabba the Hut is holed up in some rat infested slums, conducting his dirty business from the shadows.

Unless it’s properly prepared, I find that Hutt is tough with a gamey taste. Generally it’s not the most appetizing option on the menu. But deviantART member KatesKakes’s version promises to be sweet and moist.

After seeing this great Star Wars version of Marcel Duchamp’s mechanically abstracted Nude Descending a Staircase, Irene Gallo wanted to see what other geek interpretations of classic artworks have been put out there. The resulting round up is quite enjoyable.

The exposed thermal exhaust port wasn’t the only design problem that the Death Star had. It was plagued by low flow toilets that didn’t work, stereo circuits that melted because they weren’t insulated from engine heat and, as Joshua Tyree explains, a worthless trash compactor. Here are just two of the reasons why the compactor was an utter failure:

2. Why do both walls of the trash compactor move towards each other, rather than employing a one-movable-wall system that would thus rely on the anchored stability, to say nothing of the strength, of the other, non-moving wall, to crush trash more effectively?

3. Why does the trash compactor compact trash so slowly, and with such difficulty, once the resistance of a thin metal rod is introduced? Surely metal Death Star pieces are one of the main items of trash in need of compacting. It thus stands to reason that the trash compactor should have been better designed to handle the problem of a skinny piece of metal. (And while I hate to be the sort of person who says I told you so, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that a one-movable-wall system would have improved performance.)

Tran, Ken, and Rodney (who writes for GAS) got together to build a 50-inch long Super Star Destroyer from the deluxe LEGO kit. All 3152 pieces of it. And they documented the process in photos, which you can see at Geeks Are Sexy. Link

There’s something so wrong about combining the the mythos of Skyrim with that of Star Wars that it just has to be right. While there’s a lot of talking before you get to the good part, the bottom line is yes, you can get a lightsaber in Skyrim.

In celebration of reference to the Phantom Menace in 3D release, a band of student filmmakers got together and decided to put out the sweded version of the film.

It’s short, super silly and cheesy, and all you really need to get you through this dark time in the Star Wars universe, at least until the next parody video appears on the interwebs.

It’s finally here! Star Wars Uncut is a crowdsourced fan re-creation of Episode IV. Casey Pugh, the humanitarian responsible for the project, divided the entire movie into 472 15-second segments. Fans volunteered to make those segments, which Pugh then compiled. Legal issues prevented the immediate release of the finished product, but now you can watch the entire movie in one video.

This beautiful papercraft Darth Vader imitates the Christian icons of Byzantine art. It was made by the Spanish designer Lubolo. The best part of the project is the video at the link which shows how Lubolo made it. If you’ve ever wondered how three-dimensional papercraft images are made, the video will give you a great demonstration.

Believe it or not, this is a completely edible cake. A 6′ 4″ tall Storm Trooper cake was constructed by Amanda Oakleaf Cakes for the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston. The project took ten people two weeks of work, but how they did it is no secret. By popular demand, the bakery posted a photo gallery that depicts the process of building the cake, which was later consumed by around 600 fans. Link -via Boing Boing

To be fair, Ewoks already look a lot like cute little puppies and Darth doesn’t look quite right without his helmet. That being said, Princess Leia looks spot on.

This unlikely romance actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it-they’re both prone to violent fits of rage, he is more swine-like than Kermit will ever be, and they both enjoy spending time touring the stars in spaceships.

Continuing the parade of “dear god, make it stop!” inducing advertising for The Phantom Menace in 3D, a new animated commercial has emerged for Lipton Brisk Iced Tea that, I must admit, is beautifully animated and very cute.

There’s even a mobile app centered around the battle between Yoda and Darth Maul, which you can check out here.  Now, why do I have the feeling that these ads are going to look a whole lot better than a 3d converted version of The Phantom Menace?

Vader, “Star Wars’” intergalactic arch-villain, was voiced by James Earl Jones and played by six foot six (1.98 meter) former weightlifter David Prowse, but Anderson stepped in during the key fight scenes.

“David Prowse wasn’t very good with a sword and Bob couldn’t get him to do the moves,” said Anderson’s former assistant, Leon Hill. “Fortunately Bob could just don the costume and do it himself.”

Anderson later added to his vast body of work by directing fencing scenes in The Princess Bride and The Fellowship of the Ring.

All of these questions are very much tied together. We all want MORE Star Wars movies, I think that’s not really up for debate for fans. But we want them to be GOOD, and recently that would seem to mean wrestling complete creative control away from George Lucas, something it’s clear he shouldn’t have. The first three Star Wars films were a collaborative effort between many, many people, but now? Lucas is supreme overlord of the property, and the new trilogy was him from start to finish. If the same rules applied to new movies, would you even want him to make them?

I’m having trouble following the plot of this Doctor Who episode. I mean more so than usual. But also like a Doctor Who episode, it’s great fun even when it doesn’t make sense.
