The folks at Old Murder House Theater have created some great productions that are more akin to B movies than live theater. Their newest live play is a performance of the science fiction 1980’s “classic” Robocop. Check out the video at the link.
Darren Aronofsky no longer needs to remake the Paul Verhoeven masterpiece, RoboCop, a movie so entrenched in our collective subconscious that its dystopian future may have influenced the downfall of the Detroit more than the collapse of the auto industry. Instead, we can all be satisfied with this strange monster: a live production based on the film RoboCop, with sets made entirely from cardboard.

After mayor Dave Bing nixed the idea of a Robocop statue in Detroit, interest in the potential project grew immediately. A website was launched. A Facebook group sprang up, and a Kickstarter project welcomed donations. The Imagination Station in Detroit offered a place on its property at Roosevelt Park to put the statue. And now, the project has exceeded its goal of $50,000!
Bing’s office is still not convinced, but a spokeswoman said the city is studying how it could accept and display a gift RoboCop statue.
“We know there are a lot of people that care deeply about the issue, and we respect that,” said Karen Dumas of Bing’s office. “But I’m still not sure that RoboCop is the best message for the city of Detroit.”
Paffendorf said the RoboCop statue could go somewhere downtown if the city approves, perhaps near the landmark fist statue honoring legendary boxer Joe Louis.

The Mayor of Detroit has been crowd-sourcing ideas to reinvigorate the Motor City – and he actually received a pretty cool suggestion, no doubt inspired at least in part by Philadelphia’s statue of their hometown movie hero Rocky.
Sadly, the short-sighted Bing politely declined the idea, which was overflowing with win.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who has taken to the Internet to solicit ideas for the city’s revival, said on Monday there were no plans for a RoboCop statue to honor the 1987 science fiction movie based on Detroit. The question had come in via Twitter.
“There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop,” Bing wrote on his Twitter account. “Thank you for your suggestion.”
Bing touched off an immediate wave of Twitter messages from fans of the movie who hope he will reconsider, and others amused that he had even responded.
Almost three-year-old Gram wanted to be Robocop for Halloween, so his dad went to work and made this costume. They went out for a photo shoot and met some real Detroit police officers!
They even let him sit in the police car. He in awe during the whole encounter. Detroit’s finest were there to help protect a movie or TV Show that was filming on that block. While we were talking, some Hollywood-type rushed over to take a picture of the kid with his camera phone. “I’m good friends with Peter Weller, the guy who played Robocop on the movie,” he said. “He’s gonna get a kick out of this.” The guy proceeded to e-mail the photo to Weller, so chances are the real Robocop has seen my little Robocop. Then we headed back to the first precinct for some repairs (after such an eventful shift, the paint was peeling off the suit and parts were falling off).
