What happens to your browser when you get Rickrolled? Carlos Bueno visualized the network packets of a YouTube video, slowed down 12 times:

You can clearly see the handshake, some odd client/server negotiation, and the full ramp-up.

Each flying circle represents a network packet. The small green ones are control packets: ACK, SYN, etc. The larger blue ones are data packets.

The data is from a real tcpdump of the first 4 seconds of Rick Astley’s music video.

Virus Rickrolls Jailbroken iPhones

An Australian computer hacker named Ashley Towns has created a virus that … rickrolls jailbroken iPhones:

The Australian programmer who claims to have created the world’s first Apple iPhone virus as a prank has told Computerworld he does not regret writing it.

The worm, ‘Ikee’ changes iPhone owners’ wallpaper and replaces it with a photo of ‘80s pop star Rick Astley and the message “ikee is never going to give you up”.

Twenty-one-year-old Wollongong resident Ashley Towns, said he created the virus out of curiosity and boredom.

“I had just formatted my iPhone and it told me to set the password in bold, big letters and I wondered how many people have actually done that," Towns said.

“So I ran a scan on my [Optus] 3G network and there was 26 phones running the service that’s vulnerable, and out of that 26, 25 hadn’t changed their passwords.”

Total Eclipse of the Heart: the Literal Video Version

I looked back through the archives and I don’t think this is a repost, but even if it is, it’s probably worth it. It’s Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” but with lyrics that describe what’s going on in the video. And, wow, I had never seen this actual video. I had no idea “Total Eclipse of the Heart” had such a pedophile theme going on.

Other literal videos include Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”, A-Ha’s “Take On Me”, and Starship’s “We Built This City,” but I think Total Eclipse is definitely the best.
