Financial Advice from a Man Who’s Been Retired Since 1969

Posted by John Farrier in Business, Money & Finance on January 17, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Leonard McCracken worked for a steel company until he retired in 1969. He’s now 107 and has been living on savings, Social Security, and an annuity payment ever since. Bankrate.com’s Jennie L. Phipps asked McCracken to share his wisdom about managing personal finances that permitted him to remain retired for 41 years. Among his suggestions was to always get a job, even if it’s for much lower pay than you’re used to:

McCracken was unemployed about 45 years ago after his previous employer went bankrupt. He had to take a job driving a truck that paid $5 per day. It was a low point in his life, but between that and a commission sales job that he took at night, he and his family muddled through until he got back on his feet.

Grandpa Goes Underground

When Leonid Murlyanchik retired, he spat on the shuffleboard court and turned his back on early bird specials. This one man wrecking crew has spent every year since 1984 single-handedly designing and digging his own Russian metro; and you thought it was cool when your grandfather built you a clubhouse out of plywood…

Russian hero Leonid Murlyanchik has been building his metro alone since 1984. All materials are bought for his retired fee. Construction is not over yet.

World’s Longest-serving Bartender

Posted by Miss Cellania in World Records on August 21, 2009 at 10:52 am

Angelo Cammarata is finally retiring. The 95-year-old bartender has been serving customers at Cammarata’s in Pittsburgh for 77 years. That puts him in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-serving bartender ever. The family bar has been sold and will be under new management in a few weeks. The new owners asked Cammarata to stay on, but he is looking forward to taking it easy.

“Camm,” as people call him, started serving beer at his father’s North Side grocery the moment Prohibition ended at midnight on April 7, 1933. The memory is as clear to him as the strike of the library clock that signaled it was time to start opening bottles of Fort Pitt. His immigrant father built a bar on that site in 1935 and Angelo kept working there, taking a break to serve in the Navy in World War II.

Cammarata says the work kept him young. Link -via Fark
