AMC is promoting the return of the TV show Mad Men with a minimalist poster showing a falling man, with a blank expanse around him. The only other thing the poster contains is the date at the bottom right. That’s just asking to be embellished, and plenty of folks have great ideas about what to add. Mysterious beings that disable computers are called bugs. Before computers, mysterious beings that sabotaged vehicles and other machines were called gremlins. This use of the term originated in the 1920s to describe unexplained problems with military aircraft, according to Wikipedia. Students from the School of Visual Arts, New York attended a class taught by partners of Chermayeff & Geismar, the renowned firm that designed for Pepsi and National Geographic. One of their assignments was to create a poster of “opposites.” Do you have any ideas for what would be a great opposite image? I’m disappointing myself, since the only worthy idea I can think of has already been created.

We’ve seen plenty of minimalist movie posters, but this might be the first time we’ve come across art like this for music. Swedish designer Viktor Hertz, whose honest logos made the rounds a while back, uses simple pictography to illustrate the title of songs. Japan is well-known for its fascination with pop culture icons, which is why it’s not too surprising that even their subway posters feature immediately recognizable characters including Jesus, Superman, Marilyn Monroe and more. Public health posters from the World War I and World War II eras warned soldiers of the dire consequences of venereal diseases (now called STDs). Since military men were the target, blame was squarely put on the woman they may encounter. This gallery at Environmental Graffiti also features a French poster that even a non-French reader can decipher. Link

Stefanos Birbotsukis posted a series of eight minimalist posters for several British TV series. It took a while for Alex to figure out this Mr. Bean poster -and I still haven’t, but I haven’t seen much British TV, either. He also has posters for Doctor Who, Coupling, How Not to Live Your Life, and Little Britain. Link

The Jaws poster was so iconic that is has become ripe for parodies and being as how it’s Shark Week right now, there’s no time like the present to appreciate these great spoofs on the original movie artwork.

I known a lot of you guys might not be big fans of heavy metal music, but even if you don’t appreciate the genre, you should at least enjoy the scientific organization of these bands. For those that do like heavy metal, rest assured that it does have some of the most classic bands in the genre including AC/DC, Girlschool, Judas Priest and Ministry.

Video Games

Steve Thomas is able to master an array of artistic styles and he does a great job of integrating these with pop culture icons. He’s made travel posters for The Lord of The Rings, propaganda posters for social media and all kinds of other great works, but my personal favorite are his delightful videogame propaganda posters like this one for Joust. He broke the series into 12 parts so you can even buy a calendar of them.

Star Wars

Artist Steve Squall made these recruitment posters for both the Rebel Alliance and the Imperial Navy. I have to say, given the messages of the Rebel Alliance posters that memorialize Alderaan and condemn wookiee slavery, I don’t see why anyone would want to join the Imperial Navy.

Stormtroopers

I love DeviantArt user Comixmill’s poster reminding stormtroopers to enforce height requirements because it’s one of those things you won’t get unless you’re really into Star Wars and remember the line Leia says to Luke when they first meet.

The Mushroom Kingdom

These four awesome Mario-themed propaganda posters, notably all recruiting for Bowser’s evil squad, are limited edition prints available as a set from Fro Design Co. for only $80.

Panda Revolution

There’s something so delightful about pandas that their propaganda actually makes me want to sign up to fight for any cause they are promoting. I think DeviantArt user Xaiobaosg’s panda revolution posters are so cute, they’re seriously dangerous for society.

Bert

After illustrator Kevin Skinner’s younger brother had a heart attack, Kevin opted to raise money for his family’s medical bills the best way he knew how –by offering limited edition linocuts on eBay. Perhaps the coolest of the artworks was this image, called Invincible, depicting Bert in a very ominous Soviet-style poster.

Gorf

If you watch enough Muppets, then you probably get the obscure gorf reference, but if not, it’s still easy to appreciate the fine level of detail in this picture by Dave Pryor, including the “It’s Not Easy Being Green” text in the background.

Dino D-Day

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if the Nazi scientists were able to resurrect dinosaurs and put them on the front line against the Allies, then you have got to check out the upcoming game, Dino D-Day. To help promote this brilliant resurrection of the played out WWII first person shooter genre, the company making the game is selling an array of WWII-style propaganda posters featuring dinosaurs. The result is mind-bogglingly awesome.

Dalek

All of you Doctor Who lovers will be sure to appreciate these fun Dalek “Victory” posters the BBC put out to promote the “Victory of the Daleks” episode that featured Winston Churchill fighting Nazi Germany with the help of the Daleks.

Lenin Cat

If you’re a big fan of I Can Has Cheezburger and their many other photo sites, then you are likely familiar with the epic battle between Business Cat and Lenin Cat. For a minute, the shop was selling this pro-communist kitteh tee, and while it’s sold out now, they might bring it back if enough people ask for it to be reprinted. As of right now, Business Cat is still tee shirt free, so score one for Lenin Cat.

The Smurfs

DeviantArt user Domnx makes a lot of propaganda art, but this Smurfs one is particularly great. I love how she switched up the usual communist red tones for blue and worked “Papa” into the slogan.

Sponge Bob

Never has a little yellow sponge looked so intimidating as this. Interestingly, this picture by DeviantArt user BeJay was inspired by the many propaganda artworks of fellow site user Domnx.

Planet of the Apes

Imagine Charlton Heston’s face if he stumbled upon this intimidating pro-ape poster by Deviant Art user Satansgoalie.

Social Media

Brian Lane Winfield Moore’s propaganda posters may have a distinct WWII style, but with the themes all focused on social media, the designs are all ready for WWIII.

Zombies

Apparently Brian Merice created this image so he could submit it as a tee design on Threadless. Personally, I’m a little sad this shirt never got made. I certainly would have voted for it.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but is seems to me that creating an inspired dedication is much more flattering than just copying it. That’s why artistic takes on classic movie posters are so cool, they combine true creativity and adoration to the original. We even sell some of these posters in the Neatoshop (like the one seen above), The Zombie Wars posters by Matt Busch. Here are some more excellent artist renditions of classic movies and television shows.

Star Wars: The Villains

In anticipation of the Star Wars 25^th Anniversary, the same Matt Busch responsible for the brilliant Zombie Wars poster also created a poster that depicts only those fighting for the Dark Side.

Brouha on Mustafar

You’ve gotta admit, an epic battle between Anakin and his master, Obi Wan Kenobi would be completely worth a $49.95 Pay Per View fee. The guys over at Old Red Jalopy did a great job at capturing the spirit of a classic boxing poster while incorporating plenty of Star Wars touches.

Imperial Recruitment Propaganda

Like our earth armies, the Empire needs to constantly advertise in order to keep recruitment numbers high. Especially while the rebels are busy destroying whole Death Stars full of troops. These posters by Feng Zhu are sure to help get the enrollment numbers rising.

Minimalist Planet Travel Signs

These minimalist planet posters by Justin Van Genderen are beyond cool both for their travel-style designs and the art deco inspired images used for each planet.

Rebel Transport, Inc.

I adore Steve Thomas’ art and his delightful travel posters were one of the biggest inspirations for me to do this post. While this Rebel Transport poster is my favorite of his Star Wars works, there are plenty more on his site, so please view the rest at the link.

Lord Of the Rings

If you like the artwork from Steve’s Rebel Transport, Inc., but prefer Tolkien over Lucas, then be sure to check out his website anyway to enjoy travel posters for The Shire and other wonderful places from the Lord of the Rings universe.

Star Trek

If you know your Star Trek, then you already know the problem with tribbles. Even if you weren’t familiar with the threat though, this poster by Olly Moss would quickly fill you in on the matter.

Lost

Star Trek isn’t Olly Moss’ only inspiration for fun poster designs though. This Lost poster is brilliant in that only a fan of the show will recognize the many references included in the artwork.

Dexter Season By Season

These five Dexter posters are each inspired by a different season of the show. They were created by graphic designer Ty Mattson and soon became so popular that Showtime began selling them on their website.

Parks And Recreation

Mike Mitchell’s Casablanca-styled poster for Parks and Recreation is brilliant in that the goofy tv show and dramatic film have practically nothing in common, but the poster still looks perfect in its silliness –which does fit the humor of the show quite well.

X Men

Eric Tan is another great artist in the poster arena. This X Men poster is great, as are his designs for The Incredibles and Wall-E, which were both inspired by the artwork used on the old Disneyland ride posters.

Ghostbusters Ghost Trap Instructions

The 3G Show was an art exhibition exclusively featuring pieces revolving around Ghostbusters, Goonies and Gremlins. This ghost trap instructional poster was Tom Whalen’s contribution to the show.

Monty Python and The Holy Grail

The same gallery that hosted the 3G show also hosted a Crazy 4 Cult art show, which included this great Monty Python poster by Brandon Schaefer.

Wizard of Oz

Worth1000 user tocath created this hilarious recruitment propaganda poster for the Wicked Witch of the West. I always thought she forced the flying monkeys to join her army through the draft, but apparently her minions are all volunteers. Good to know.

The Godfather

Sure this poster by the Los Angeles Pop Art Gang might not look as artistic as many of the other posters on this list, but what sets this one apart is the fact that it was created with the entire script from the movie.

Time Bandits

This great Time Bandits poster was made by Justin Erickson to help promote a “Back to The 80’s” film screening series in his home town.

Hitchcock

What’s great about these reimagined Hitchcock posters by Laz Marquez is that they look modern, which emphasizes just how delightfully timeless his films are.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I absolutely love how dramatically intense this Ninja Turtles poster by Jeff Procter looks. Imagine how different the movie would be if it was at all like this poster.

Inglorious Basterds

Alex Pardee is one of my favorite artists, which is why I was so excited to see his epic rendition of Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. If you like this, visit his website and check out his other awesome works.

Steven King Movies

Artist Nick Tassone has created a variety of great minimalist posters all based on Steven King stories that were turned into movies. While they’re all pretty great, I have to admit this Misery one is my favorite.

Lego Versions of Oscar Nominated Films

Old Red Jalopy created all of these Legoized versions of last year’s Best Picture nominees, which were then featured on Next Movie.

Movie Mash Ups

When it comes to iconic movie posters, sometimes we get the images lodged in our head so deeply that it’s hard to imagine any other film using the same artwork. That’s why some of the movie mash up posters from this B3ta.com challenge are just so brilliant.

Minimalist

If you like minimalism, you’ll love the 54 minimalist posters featured on News Radio WJNO. I don’t know who created the artworks, so if you do, please share in the comments.

Pictograms

These pictogram posters by Viktor Hertz do an excellent job of depicting the subject of the movie in the most simplistic manner possible. I recommend viewing the link to check out the rest, particularly the Tron and Rosemary’s Baby designs.

Now I’ll be honest, there are TONS of these on the net and they are all pretty good. I chose what I thought were the best of all the movie and show inspired posters I could find. If you have any favorites I left off the list, please share them in the comments!

Ten movies are in contention for the 2011 Oscar for Best Motion Picture. While we suppose they are all good films, there is no movie that can’t be improved by being rendered in Lego! An art collective by the name of Old Red Jalopy re-created the posters for all ten Best Picture nominees in Lego form. I love this poster for 127 Hours! See all ten posters at NextMovie. Instead of reprinting the studio posters, film distributors in some eastern European countries commission new posters for movies, and many are works of art. Monster Brains has a collection of Polish and Czech posters for Japanese monster movies, including this awesome Czech illustration for the film Monster from a Prehistoric Planet (Daikyoü Gappa). Illustrator Steve Thomas created a series of beautiful retro posters for locations, transportation facilities, and events featured in the Star Wars movies. They may be available to purchase as prints soon! Link -via Buzzfeed

Workers on the renovation of London Underground’s Notting Hill Gate Station were recently surprised (flabbergasted in fact) to discover a long abandoned passageway with all the original advertising posters from the 1950s still intact.

In around 1959 Notting Hill Tube Station underwent modernisation. The old lifts were abandoned and new escalators were installed. The passageways to the lift were sealed off. Recent work at the station has rediscovered these passageways and when they were opened they revealed a marvellous time capsule. The adverts which were on the walls the day the passageways were sealed off remained and reveal a world long since disappeared.

Pink Tentacle has larger versions of 14 beautiful travel posters produced by Japanese steamship companies. These were from the early 20th century, when travel itself was supposed to be as luxurious as the destination. Link

NASA has been making posters of their missions available for years, but they were usually pretty straightforward. Then in 2008, someone got the idea to recreate a Matrix-style poster featuring the mission astronauts.
