Oobject captures the majesty and opulence that once defined theater archiecture, and the sadness of their current emptiness in this gallery of urban decay photography. The theater pictured here is in Hellingly Asylum, Sussex.

Theaters are a relic of the past. Don’t believe me? Look at drive-in movie theaters and the shakespearean stage. They simply don’t exist in modern America anymore, save for a relic or three buried in a small town somewhere. This list pays tribute to the thespians and films of the past century, to their writers and directors and to the actors who made them happen.

Amusing Real Estate Listings

Lovely Listing is a collection of user-submitted finds in the the real estate world. Sometimes you just have to wonder what people were thinking, whether it be the agent’s choice of photo, the seller’s interior decor, or the builder themselves, as exemplified above:

Dude. Check it out. The weirdest thing ever is going on here. You see? You see it? So bizarre: the toilet paper is hung on the shower stall door. Crazy!

There might be something else wrong here, too.

Exploding Water Balloon Photos

These fantastic shots of water balloons taken with a high speed camera are just fantastic. Who knew water could look so fascinating?

They bring back memories of when you were a young scamp, mischievously dropping water bombs on hapless cyclists from overpasses, or soaking whole streets in drive-by drench-athons – but those days of innocence are gone now. So, it just leaves us to sit back and wonder at the beautiful physics of the things – as well as the devilish uses to which they can be put.

2 Photographers: 365 Days of Random Pairings

Josh and Nina are two friends. Every day, they each take a photo. Operating under a pact of absolute secrecy, neither knows what the other is working on. Each morning, they post their photos on MintyForest side by side. The results are often surprising — not least to the photographers themselves.

They have just completed their one year project goal with 365 daily random pairings – some of the combinations are beautiful, some are funny, some are absurd, all are lovely and visually engaging…

An experiment in blind-collaboration, the coupled images of the MintyForest project are explorations of both creative and personal synchronicity — as subject matter, color palette, and technique are compared and contrasted anew with each day. (It’s also an excuse for Josh and Nina to use their shiny new cameras more often.)

This is strangely fascinating, and makes me want to go visit my parents’ house to raid their LPs and see what I can do with them. Although I’m not convinced they have anything I want to be associated with. Lobo? Best of Bread? Probably not.

Breathtaking large-format pictures of London at night

The Big Picture, Alan Taylor's always stunning large-format picture blog for the Boston Globe, is featuring amazingly detailed bird's-eye views of London at night by photographer Jason Hawkes, a follow-up to a prior post. Acrophobics beware!

Jason shot these images with a camera attached to gyro-stabilized mounts from a Eurocopter AS355, hired out at around £1150 (GBP) per hour, using Nikon gear and either a 14-24mm or a 70-200mm lens. Even with that, the low light and heavy vibrations can make things difficult, Jason says "I often shoot tethered to my MacBook Pro to check the sharpness of the images whilst I shoot."

If Movie Posters Were More Honest

I really hated Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so I particularly liked this one. Anyway, Holy Taco is sick of being lied to, so they created some movie posters they felt were more accurate than the advertisements you see. This is a really simple idea, but the effect is really interesting. The artist has just taken pictures – some are his personal pictures and some have been found on the Internet – and replaced a real person with a drawing. He also gives a tutorial on how to create your own, if you’re interested.

Amazing Long Exposure Photos

Long exposure photos are so cool because they view things in ways your eyes never could. Digital Photography School has a great collection of long exposure images and the elapsed time it took for each image to come out. For some great images, I highly recommend visiting the site and looking at all of them.

Spiral Wine Cellars - Wine Right Under Your Feet

It’s like a magical door to Wine Wonderland! For a mere $30,000, you could have this beauty installed in your house. There are some more examples here – I especially like the one in the study, because a trap door with a secret spiral wine cellar just seems perfect in the study. If I had that, I’d go one step further and have a secret passageway installed behind a bookcase as well. That’s it. I’m ordering one.

Any Lost fans out there? (Maybe we should start a Lost thread in the forums.) This picture reminds me of Eko’s brother’s plane. Anyway, this gallery is full of cool pictures of Mother Nature taking (back) over. Most are jungle pictures, but there are a couple of others as well – the one of kudzu completely devouring a house in Georgia is interesting.

I could waste a lot of time at TotallyLooksLike.com. No, wait, I already have. Some of the comparisons are astute (Billy Mays really does look like Al from Home Improvement!), some of them are funny, and some of them are just plain mean. You can make your own by using their archive of pictures, or upload your own finds. A couple that I thought were funny: Suge Knight totally looks like Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Rod Blagojevich totally looks like Lego Man, and Axl Rose totally looks like Pickles.

National Geographic always has cool photo galleries, but I especially like this one. This guy is a cowfish, and although he’s transparent, he’s glowing purple because of the photographer’s strobe. He’s kind of cute.

Double Vision

Ever have a bit too much to drink only to end up getting double vision? Sure it’s funny when you’re drunk but this neat website has a very cool collection of pictures (presumably done with Photoshop) that will have you focus your eyes. Some of them are pretty funny as per the example above.
