The picture is funny enough, but in the discussion at reddit, I learned that in Minnesota, they don’t play the game by saying “duck, duck, goose,” but instead it’s “duck, duck, grey duck!” OuchoGroucho told us:

I remember that with Duck, Duck, Grey Duck one can play with the tiniest bit of subterfuge. The person that was “it” would always draw out the first syllable slightly when saying “grrrrreen duck.” Sometimes it would cause confusion, and one could slip in “grey duck” and get a slight head start. We would also say many fun colors as we went around. Moving from red duck, blue duck to lavender duck, beige duck, grrrrrassy duck.

“This train-like noise came through the fence and dove right into the pool,” said Trapotsis.

The moose fell right through the pool cover, according to Trapotsis. “He tore the cover, got entangled and just couldn’t move,” Trapotsis said. Trapotsis said his first concern was keeping the animal alive and freeing it from the cover.

At about midnight the rescue of the moose was underway. With a rope attached to the moose, nine men pulled the animal out of the water.

“I didn’t get trained on how to do this, that’s for sure,” said Jack Pushee of New Hampshire Fish and Game. “There’s a first for everything.”

Remember the albino moose that wandered the forest of Østfold, Norway? You know, the one whom the Norwegian hunters debate whether to shoot?

Well, that debate is moot thanks to a Danish hunter, who had few regrets about shooting him:

Frost, who had arrived for hunting in Norway on Monday, told Danish website bt.dk that he’d heard about a protected moose a few years ago but nothing recently. “So when I get it in my corner, I have just a few seconds to think about what I should do,” he told bt.dk. “But I decided to shoot the moose and it’s a decision I stand by.”

He quickly realized he hadn’t shot “just any moose, and when we gathered around it, someone said there would probably be press coverage.” He repeated that he “stands by” his decision to kill the moose, “although I would gladly be without all the noise that’s come afterwards.” He said he was “a bit amazed” that the shooting sparked so much reaction.

When a big bear approaches, some people choose to quietly stroll away. To give them an extra measure of safety, Anthony Victor Saunders and Adam Warwick Bell invented what they call a “pop-up device for deterring an attacking animal”.

Saunders, a London-based mountain climber, and Bell, a California patent attorney, applied for a patent in 2002, but later abandoned it. They would equip hikers with, essentially, an inflatable doll “meant to scare away an attacking or aggressive animal such as a bear”. The frightful balloon could also be used against “elk, moose, mountain lions, buffalo, hippopotamus, rhino, elephant, boar”. They explain that it “works on the principle of maximising the apparent size and ferocity of the human, intimidating the bear”.

You would never think of making a deer into a working beast of burden, but semi-domesticated reindeer in Russia and Northern Europe have been used to pull sleighs for a long time (Santa Claus notwithstanding). Could you get a moose, the largest deer species, to work for you? Minnesotastan found a picture of a moose working as a beast of burden, and found it was a Photoshop job. 16-year old Tove Sjöholm captured this amazing shot in Mute, Sweden. A spooked female moose jumped in such a way that it looked like it was jumping over a car. Here’s Google Translate’s rendering of a news article on the event:

A farm in Bjurholm, Sweden actually makes moose cheese. The lactation period of moose is short, lasting from about June to August, and the farm, owned by Christer and Ulla Johansson, keeps three moose that produce only 300 kilograms of cheese per year. The moose cheese sells for roughly US$1000 per kilogram.
