Tokyo artists Sagaki Keita creates fine art from hundreds of tiny drawings, like this rendition of the “Great Wave off Kanagawa.” The smaller drawings are sometimes silly or sinister, but each is balanced perfectly in light and dark to create the overall image. Keita doesn’t only reproduce  famous works, though his Mona Lisa is spot-on–he has a full gallery of original works all created in the same manner. Link – via WebUrbanist

Flavorwire has assembled a cool slideshow of people with artist-inspired tattoos, from the pop art of Andy Warhol to Banksy’s graffiti work. Other artists represented include Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, Georgia O’Keeffe and Frida Kahlo. I think the colors in the Starry Night-inspired sleeve above are just gorgeous.

A truck full of commercial ink crashed on an I-95 ramp in the Boston area yesterday, spilling the very expensive ink all over the highway. No one was injured in the wreck.

The ink reached two storm drains, but it is not considered a hazardous material. An environmental cleanup company has been summoned to the scene and a “careful cleanup” will be conducted under the supervision of state environmental officials, State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement.

Several hundred gallons of ink splattered onto the highway, said Joe Ferson, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Approximately 16,000 pounds of ink cartridges from the Flint Group, an Indianapolis-based company selling printing and packaging products, was bound for a newspaper company in Portland, Maine. Red, blue, and yellow ink cartridges were inside the truck, but Ferson said there is no evidence the yellow ink was released.

Because different fonts require different amounts of ink to print, you could be buying new printer cartridges less often if you wrote in, say, Century Gothic rather than Arial. Schools and businesses could save thousands of dollars with font changes. [...]

When Printer.com tested popular fonts for their ink-friendly ways, Century Gothic and Times New Roman topped the list. Calibri, Verdana, Arial and Sans Serif were next, followed by Trebuchet, Tahoma and Franklin Gothic Medium. Century Gothic uses about 30 percent less ink than Arial.

The amount of ink a font drains is mainly driven by the thickness of its lines. A font with "narrow" or "light" in its name is usually better than its "bold" or "black" counterpart, said Thom Brown, an ink researcher at Hewlett-Packard Co., the world’s top maker of printers.

“It is difficult to imagine how you can have something as soft and sloppy as an ink sac fossilised in three dimension, still black, and inside a rock that is 150 million years old.

“The structure is similar to ink from a modern squid so we can write with it. I suppose we could theoretically use it for food colouring, too, but I don’t think I will try tasting it.”

Hayden Hamilton has devised a tool called GreenPrint, software that analyzes what a computer sends to a
printer, to eliminate paper waste and save ink.

GreenPrint “looks for pages that have no type or just a few lines of type (users can set the parameters). Then, the software automatically eliminates these pages from the print job. Users can reselect the pages if desired and deselect any other pages they don’t want to print — say, the pages of legal jargon at the end of an airline reservation. The software lets users eliminate images from a print job — for instance, the maps generated in online driving directions — thus saving ink. GreenPrint also allows users to avoid printing altogether by saving documents as PDF files.”
