In retrospect, Eric Smith should have just bought the Halo armor directly:

Her ring wasn’t perfect. After being reshaped, the white gold band was smudged and uneven. The diamond, instead of a traditional, glittering transparent gem, was a canary yellow, her favorite color. She’d spoken at length about her dream engagement ring, how she wanted the diamond to be this specific, light shade of yellow. It looked blemished, yes, but that’s how she wanted it. And that’s how she was, really. Imperfect but still seemingly perfect.

It was the imperfect/perfect wedding ring — a grand, romantic gesture. So, naturally, she broke up with him. Smith wanted to be rid of the ring, so he sold it on eBay. But the money remained in his PayPal account, a nagging reminder of this agonizing experience. He knew that he needed to get rid of the money in a meaningful way. A Master Chief armor set was, of course, that way:

I’d wanted the suit for so long, and after such epic heartbreak, receiving each piece of armor—arriving in seven shipments, over the course of eight months—became an unintentionally cathartic process. As the shoulders, forearms, chest-piece, and helmet arrived slowly, one section at a time… well, with each part I got a small piece of myself back.

Model maker Michal Miszta crafted an engagement ring box with a Toy Story theme:

I was helping the cupid recently, commissioned by romantic guy to craft the engagement ring box related to Disney/Pixar Toy Story movie. We came with this idea that all characters from the movie support him and help to convince the girl to be his wife. They even built the “Marry Him” sign with LEGO bricks I managed to sculpt and fit 8 characters in this 95mm x 65mm x 75mm box. We have Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Sqeeze, Mr. and Mrs Potato Heads and in the center Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear holding the ring. They are sculpted in green stuff specially to fit the scratchbuilt wooden box. all is painted with acrylic paints and vartnished to give the satin finish. Lego sign is laser engraved in plywood. I didnt make molds of the figurines so it will be only one model like this worldwide.

James Ng was set to propose to his fiancée on a hot-air balloon ride when the symbol of their love fell 500 feet into the woods.

Ng, 26, pastor of New Mercies Community Church, had hidden the 1-carat diamond ring in a box in his camera case. As they floated along on Oct. 29, the case slipped from his hands.

"I just watched it tumble, and it hit a tree and spun around, and the stuff fluttered out of it," Ng recalls. "And I just put my head down on the side of the balloon, and I was just — I just couldn’t believe I’d just done that.

"My first thought was don’t tell her … and buy another ring — which it took me forever to afford the one I had," Ng says. But Sonya Bostic, 27, caught on. "When he reacted the way he did, that’s when I knew," she says. "Wait a second! My ring’s in there!"

But the story has a happy ending. Dick Russ and Rob Jennings of USA Today have the story: Link

In another example of a marriage proposal not going according to plan, comes this story from New York.

Don Walling decided to propose to his girlfriend, Gina Pellicani, on the Brooklyn Bridge while his family watched and videotaped.

But at the moment of truth – with ring in hand – disaster struck, and it wasn’t because Gina refused to say, “I do.” Walling dropped the ring through a crack in the pedestrian bridge and into traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge roadway below.

“I got on one knee, proposed and it just flew out,” Walling said. “I watched it fall through the crack on the bridge, right between the wood planks.”

But he didn’t let his shock sway him for long. Walling swung into action.

“I kissed her, said I was sorry and told her I am going to get that ring back,” Walling said.

The groom-to-be jumped onto the bridge’s roadway and began looking for the ring. Miraculously, he found it, with the help of his family and fiancée looking on from above.

Like many guys, Reed Harris of Farmington, New Mexico, wanted to give his girlfriend a very memorable marriage proposal. Harris’ plan was to place the engagement ring in girlfriend Kaitlin Whipple’s Frosty dessert and have her ‘discover’ it as she was being filmed. Instead of discovering the ring, she swallowed it!

“I felt nothing at all,” she told Lauer. “I was racing my friends, so there was no way I was going to lose that competition.”

All was not lost though, a disbelieving Whipple was taken to a hospital where her x-rays showed the missing engagement ring! It was then and there Harris finally proposed, and a day later the ring was safely recovered.
