The gown, designed for the upcoming Valentine’s Day, involves more than 170 hours of labor and reportedly weighs just under two stone.

The gown features petals from 1,000 Naomi red roses all over the dress, fifteen Carmen roses and 200 chrysanthemums, decorated with gold-leaf, around the hip and skirt of the dress, and petals from 150 Purple Power roses, 75 gerberas and 300 carnations, all picked from Walmart’s Valentine’s bouquet collection, to flush this creation.

In a beauty pageant, every edge helps. Everything feature must be perfect, every strand of hair must stay in place. In this case, that’s about two hundred pounds worth. This dress is made of a massive quantity of human hair. It was created by Thelma Madine and Ryan Edwards for the Alternative Miss Liverpool competition this past weekend in Liverpool, UK.

The duct tape prom dress scholarship contest was going on when I was in high school, but even so, none of our dresses were nearly this outrageous. This particular couple’s costume was inspired by the late, great Andy Warhol. There are plenty more insane prom outfits at the link, so be sure to check them all out.

If anyone was interested in creating a list of the geekiest dresses on earth, this one would definitely be near the top of the list. My favorite part of the dress though is that it looks fairly simply to make, but would be an excellent Comic Con costume. If any Neatonauts who are planning to attend the convention want to get on my yearly Comic Con costumes post, this is a great way to do so.

Rachel Wright made a few dresses from vintage slips and nightgowns that depict the anatomy of the wearer. She’s doing so to express an intersection of public and private lives:

The Dream Anatomy series explore these imagined realms inside the body. Because these garments are meant to be worn, the boundary between the internal and the external is blurred. The invisible is made visible: wear your inside on the outside. By using women’s slips and nighties, articles that were not originally intended for public life, I am playiing with the line between the public and the private arenas.

New Orleans-based crafter Miss Malaprop made a dress covered with stuffed animals for the most recent Mardi Gras. She accidentally sewed through her finger with a sewing machine needle while making it, but “Either way, I’m happy with the way it turned out, it was very fun to wear and very SOFT!”

In case you’re wondering, the headband matches the rest of the outfit, reading, “In a galaxy far, far away.” The dress was created by a woman named Chenoa who is a friend of the guy who runs Chris Eng Says ‘Bwuh?’
