The Surreal Collage Art Of Irina And Silviu Szekely

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Pictures on December 8, 2011 at 11:20 pm

These thought provoking collages by Romanian-born artists Irina and Silviu Szekely have a classic Surrealist/Dada style, and perception distorting elements that guide the eyes on a strange trip around the scene.

The images used to make up each collage are simple, yet iconic, which makes each piece powerful enough to be memorable, and they remind me of classic early 20th century works by Giorgio de Chirico and Max Ernst, among others. Take your eyes over to Irina and Silviu’s Tumblr page to reveal more of their dreamy works.

Captivating Spider Man Eye Collage

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons, Pictures on November 24, 2011 at 9:28 pm

At a glance, it’s a collage made out of random images that forms the shape of Spider Man’s eye. Then you look closer, and you’re drawn into his web of mystery as you try to make out the shape of all the little Spider Man images Pascal Garcin has crammed into this collage. And is that Captain America in the center?

Philipp Igumnov’s Surreal Collages

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design, Photography on October 5, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Philipp Igumnov, an artist in Moscow, makes deliciously surreal photographic collages that take place in worlds where the weird is ordinary. My favorite is this one of a boy about to make the ultimate cannonball.

Megan Coyle

Posted by Miss Cellania in Art on September 21, 2010 at 7:35 am

Our newest entry at the Neatorama Art Blog is collage artist Megan Coyle. Her works look like paintings, but are made entirely of paper strips from magazines!

As a painter, I liked using distinct brushstrokes and bold colors. With my collages, I try to recreate the look and feel of a painting through the manipulation of paper and magazine strips. The way I cut and layer paper often looks like the distinct brushstrokes I once used in painting.

Check out a gallery of ten of Coyle’s collages at the Art Blog. Link

Cancelled Art

Posted by Queuebot in Art on March 9, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Two artists have been playing pretty games with the UK Royal Mail’s automated sorting offices. It seems the machines simply read the colour of stamps to check whether the correct postage has been used, so it doesn’t matter what shape they are. Kim Rugg and John Spurgeon each use proper stamps, only they are cut into tiny pieces to create the art on the envelopes. As long as it’s cancelled, it counts! Rugg creates tentacled monsters (pictured), fireworks and beach scenes, while Spurgeon has a collection of vintage postcards sent with confetti postage called ShakesMyMail.

Past War and Present Peace: the Siege of Leningrad Then and Now

Posted by Queuebot in Pictures on March 6, 2009 at 11:59 pm

It was a terrible time and difficult for us to imagine, when people froze to death and cooked soups from their belts and wallpaper glue just to stay alive. So how do we put ourselves in their shoes and see into the past? One man has assembled a collection of disturbing images from those dark days and collaged them with colorful images from present times. The results are spectacular, stark and thought-provoking.

“The Siege of Leningrad, also known as The Leningrad Blockade was an unsuccessful military operation by the Axis (Nazi) powers to capture Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) during World War II. The siege lasted from September 9, 1941, to January 27, 1944, when a narrow land corridor to the city was established by the Soviets. The total lifting of the siege occurred on January 27, 1944. The Siege of Leningrad was one of the longest and most destructive sieges of major cities in modern history and it was the second most costly.
