At first glance, Ron Arad’s designer bike looks like a typical unusable art piece. However, the bike is actually completely rideable and up for auction by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. 18 strips of steel are attached together to form flower-like wheels that roll with tension. Guests at the W Hotel in Leicester Square, London are able to test it out from now until October 29th. (*nudge* *nudge* Grab a video, I’d love to see it in action.)

Neatoramanaut Naimul brings us video of an event that happened at his workplace, WCG in San Francisco. A thief brazenly cuts through a bike chain and takes off on the bicycle, right in front of the office windows. The first one out the door is a designer named Kristen.
People have complained that we didn’t beat him up, but the truth is, it was pretty scary—the guy was kinda big, and when we called office security on him, he pulled a knife on the security guy (the dude in the shorts with the badge that walks down at the end of the video). We obviously didn’t know the guy had a knife, but living in SF you hear stories about deadly bike thieves.
I think stopping the theft was enough bravery for the day. -Thanks, Naimul!

A bicycle can be an art medium just as much as a canvas or a wall, right? Imagine riding around on this flamingo bicycle, with all eyes upon you! This is just one of Ten Unique Bikes (many of them roadworthy) compiled in a list at Unique Daily. Link

The design called PIT IN uses a desk or table as a bike rack. The bicycle seat then serves as a chair while you work or take a break. That is, if you are OK with sitting on a bicycle seat while you’re not riding. This could only be comfortable if my bicycle had a tractor seat. Link -via Laughing Squid
I never bought a wheelie bar, but this ad from 1966 brings back memories of doing stunts on my old spider bike, like standing on the seat… Then my mother instincts kicked in. Hey! These kids aren’t just riding without helmets, they aren’t even wearing shoes! And who encourages their kids to do wheelies, anyway? Things sure have changed in 45 years! -via Nag on the Lake
A particularly steep hill caused grief for many competitors at the BUCS Cycling Championships at Moelfre Hall Downhill Track in Wales. If you think the hill doesn’t look all that steep in this video, notice the angle of the spectators. Bonus: Banana Splits music by The Dickies. Link -via Metafilter
This helmet-cam video might make you a bit woozy. Filip Polc rides down a steep path in Valparaíso, Chile as the crowd watches. -via The Daily What
Does this look like it would deter any bicycle thief whatsoever? See a collection of lock and logic failures for both bikes and bigger vehicles in a collection at Locksmiths-R-Us. Link -Thanks, David!

Recycled Bike Chain Bottle Opener – $9.95
Back in 1991, Graham Bergh got a flat tire while biking to work. Rather than throwing it away, he decided to use the inner tube as a cradle for his stereo speakers. That gave him the idea of creating a company that specializes in recycling bicycle parts into neat gadgets, like the recycled bike chain bottle opener above.
Take a look at more of what Graham’s company Resource Revival, makes over at the NeatoShop: Link
Bill and Amarins packed up their three young daughters Cheyenne, Jasmine, and Robin and set off on a 7,000 mile journey from Mt. Vernon, Kentucky (just up the road from me) to Alaska. What’s different about this trip is that they are traveling on a bicycle built for five! They call themselves the Pedouins, which is combination of pedal and Bedouins, meaning nomadic people. The journey included a detour to Mexico, since the purpose of the trip is to teach their children about the world. The family began the trip in October of last year, and they’ve made it to California so far. You can follow their adventure on their website. Link -Thanks, Hanan!
Bike riding can get a bit boring after a while. So why not read a book while you’re at it? The Performance Book Caddy attaches to your bicycle’s handlebars, letting you focus on your text while riding. What would possibly go wrong?
Bergmönch is an interesting idea! Now you can climb a mountain with a backpack, and then unfold the backpack into a scooter of sorts so you can wheel your way down. The question: is a speedier descent worth carrying the extra weight up?

Forget Lance Armstrong! Carla and Henriette Hochdorfer, German Artistic Cycling champions, certainly take bicycling to a whole new level …

Humans may not be able to walk on water, but an invention by Li Weiguo let us bike on water! Behold the amphibious bicycle, made by water containers jerry-rigged into pontoons:
Li Weiguo’s daughter Li Jin rides the human-powered amphibious bicycle on the water in Wuhan of Hubei Province, China on May 30, 2009. The amphibious bicycle made by Li Weiguo is equipped with eight water buckets as pontoons and adjustable vane wheels as driving power. This kind of bike can walk on land and on water.

Now here’s something you don’t see everyday. The bike wanted to win with or without the rider! I wonder if he eventually got the bike?
