Random acts of violence are not funny. They aren’t. And the attack of a gorilla mascot in a Wireless Center in Strongsville, OH, last week is not funny. According to Fox8:

[T]he store has the gorilla as a marketing tool a couple of days a week. Brandon Parham, the store manager, told the TV station that he had seen the kid inside the store prior to the attack.

“Then he just emerged, dressed up as a banana, and sprinted as fast as he could at our gorilla,” Parham said. “The kid just speared our gorilla.”

Meantime, the store manager feels his guy got a bad deal: “The gorilla should have won,” Parham said.

Slipping on a banana peel is a classic cartoon gag. And now it’s the basis for a real lawsuit:

Ida Valentine, 58, is suing the 99 Cents Only store where she slipped on one last April.

She said that she suffered a herniated disk and tissue damage, spent $9,000 on medical bills and is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.

“She fell and landed on her backside,” said Courtney Mikolaj of the Quirk Law Firm in Ventura, California, which is representing her.[...]

The image in popular culture of an unwary pedestrian tripping head over heels on a banana peel stems from the late 19th century, when bananas were a popular street food in American cities and the press portrayed them as a public nuisance.

In 1879, Harper’s Weekly groused that “whosoever throws banana skins on the sidewalk does a great unkindness to the public, and is quite likely to be responsible for a broken limb.”

Eating fruits every day is healthy, but the trip to the office can be downright dangerous for your fruit. So to help save your apples, bananas, and pears from bumps and bruises, you need this: Fruit Jacket, a form-fitting neoprene "jacket" for fruits! (Bonus: it also protescts your fruit’s modesty!)

Silly? Absolutely! Useful? Perhaps – but if it gets you (or your loved ones) to eat their serving of fruit a day, then I’m sure it’s worth it!

The collection found buyers, Fred Garbutt and his mother, Virginia. They paid an undisclosed amount for the museum, which they will house next door to Garbutt’s liquor store North Shore, California. In an interview at Gawker, Garbutt tells how he came to buy the bananas.

The last week of March, I happened to be down at my mom’s house working on my daughter’s car. She called me up and said, ‘Hey go on my computer and check out this guy. He’s selling this banana museum on eBay’” I went on there and was like, Yeah, we ought to buy that and put it down at our liquor store. We’ve tried to think for the longest time of ways to bring in customers off the highway. So I thought we ought to put that down at the store—that’ll bring people in. Paint the store yellow.

Garbutt explained how he plans to expand the museum and promote it with a BMW (Banana Museum Wagon). The Banana Museum will reopen in 2011. Link -via Arbroath

The price of the museum has dropped from $45,000 to only $15,000! Before you snap up that bargain, be aware that the museum includes only the banana artifacts but no real estate, as the museum has been housed in rented space.

Bannister told the Victorville Daily Press that he decided to liquidate the collection after the Hesperia Recreation and Park District told him that he would no longer be able to rent space at the Harrison Exhibit Building in Hesperia, California where Bannister exhibited his thousands of banana goodies. He did not have another location set up and does not want to put the items in storage.

The Guiness Book of World Records says that the museum is the world’s largest collection devoted to any one fruit. Since the 1970s Bannister has done many interviews on his unique collection and has appeared on television shows including the “Tonight Show” featuring Johnny Carson. Bannister hopes that someone or some company will buy the museum and display it somewhere.

John Steven Szwalla was arrested for attempted armed robbery of a computer cafe in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He approached the store owner, Bobby Ray Mabe while pointing something that was under his shirt. Mabe and a store customer jumped on Szwalla, held him down, and called police. The “weapon” turned out to be a banana! Szwalla ate the banana before the police arrived.

“And the deputy said, ‘Ah hah! He ate the evidence,’” Mabe said. “But we had the banana peel and they took a picture of it.”

John Steven Szwalla, 17, was charged with one count of attempted armed robbery. Warrants and records with the sheriff’s office list different addresses for him, with a most recent address in Clemmons.

Deputies joked about charging him with destroying evidence, said Major Brad Stanley, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s office.

Szwalla is in the Forsyth County Jail with bond set at $50,000.

The banana we know and love today actually suck when compared to the one our grandparents ate. That cultivar, called the Gros Michel, was bigger and tastier but alas it was hit by a blight called the Panama disease and went extinct by 1960.

Now, the banana we all eat, a variety called the Cavendish, may face the same fate: Panama disease, caused by the fungus Fusarium, is back and spreading fast!

Panama disease – or Fusarium wilt of banana – is back, and the Cavendish does not appear to be safe from this new strain, which appeared two decades ago in Malaysia, spread slowly at first, but is now moving at a geometrically quicker pace. There is no cure, and nearly every banana scientist says that though Panama disease has yet to hit the
banana crops of Latin America, which feed our hemisphere, the question is not if this will happen, but when. Even worse, the malady has the potential to spread to dozens of other banana varieties, including African bananas, the primary source of nutrition for millions of people.

Panama disease is so virulent that a single clump of dirt tracked in on a tire tread or a shoe can spark a country-wide outbreak.
