I never understood why they didn’t try to recruit younger viewers with a show based around the Starfleet academy.
It wouldn’t HAVE to be 90210 (or worse, Saved by the Bell) in space… I think proper planning could create an interesting scenerio that could be taken seriously (in part).

I wouldn’t be suprised if they did, but didn’t get past the pilot.

That’s not a bad idea, Snarlz. I think that a Starfleet Academy show could last a few episodes, especially if it took a light-hearted approach.

Man I wanna watch that sitcom. I mean TNG was always sorta like a soap, but a sitcom would be fun.

I would so watch a sitcom like that.

And I love watching those two, together — acting, talking, what have you… they’ve got great chemistry.

The academy thing floated around for a long time, there were even scripts if I remember correctly, but the fans and studios really didn’t want the 90210 factor. It seems though like the JJ reboot of the movies was at least partly born of those ideas. Personally, I don’t think a series would have worked out that well, but for the big screen, in smaller bites, I think it makes more sense.

As for the reboot, the action was great, and overall I liked the movie, but the perfectionist and geek in me gets driven batty by the complete lack of semi-plausible science in the show. Part of what made the Roddenberry series appeal to me as a child was how close they flirted with what “could be”, and including a surprising amount of practical tech concepts. They had a lot of wild stuff too, but the new series seemed to be written to explicitly toss it all out the window. :)

Hahaha, that was funnier than I thought, I never liked Troy, but the way she “disses” Patrick Stewart is very funny :-)

NO! NO no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

Kill It With Fire! What a bad idea. Srsly, why not make a corny sitcom with TNG’s worst two actors.

    Geez.

She really has no room to say anything negative about Patrick Stewart.

God, this video just wrecked my morning. I’m gonna go outside.

Dave, she was being sarcastic by making fun of “baldy”. Loved when she called Ryker my “zimbabwe”. She’s funny.

The baldy comments are clearly in fun, and probably a sign that that these two are actually real buddies with Stewart. I never really thought about it before, but you can tell from this that all of them were very close, which doesn’t always happen on ensemble shows – even though we viewers want to think it does. It’s touching. And clearly the sitcom thing is part-joke/part-fantasy. They know that.

I grew up on the original ST and watched quite a few of TNG…and practically nothing of the rest. It was really really nice to see Marina and Jonathan together and giving us some insights to this amazing cast. I’d really love to see Gates and ‘Old Baldy’ sit together and reminisce about the old days. And maybe a round table with some of the other cast as well. I really hope they’ll make another movie. Maybe a return of the Borg and Locutus and losing Pickard at the end when he become fully Borg. Leaving the audience crying and then have him resurrected in the next movie. Good cliffhanger.
