Controversy Over Forever 21 Maternity Line

By Tiffany in Clothes, News, Pregnancy on Jul 19, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Forever 21, the clothing store known for catering to teens, has launched a new Maternity line.  What is puzzling is where it was launched.  The flagship stores are in Arizona, Alaska, California, Utah and Texas.  Three of those states, Arizona, California, and Texas have some of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country.  Was the company specifically marketing to the pregnant teen crowd? The company says no.

When I was pregnant (at 24 and at 27) I frequented Forever21 for their extra long, stretchy, cheap shirts that fit my small frame better than most maternity shirts. I was certainly not the only pregnant woman in there, and I had sales people tell me that they have more pregnant women buying those shirts every day. IMO, it’s just good business sense. I hope that it doesn’t serve to “normalize” teen pregnancy… I can’t imagine anyone would want to, but maybe those unfortunate teens who do become pregnant won’t feel quite so ostracized.
