Bloemencorso Zundert 2016

Every year on the first Sunday in September, the town of Zundert, Netherlands, stages a parade of fantastical floats made of dahlias, as part of the Corso Zundert, or Zundert Flower Festival. Bloemencorso Zundert is a parade, but also a competition between 20 surrounding hamlets who all attempt to make the most elaborate float. "Dangerous Cargo," this dragon straining against its restraints was this year’s winner.

The drama provided by the dragon’s “handlers” was a bonus. How do they get that many dahlias to look good on the same day? Redditor kutjepiemel explains.

The last couple of days the floats are just made of iron with lot's of paper mache over it. Then the whole district comes together to stick nails through the flowers so that the builders can prick the flowers into the paper mache. It's a pretty intense couple of days but the result is a whole float covered in flowers in less than three days. Two days after the parade the floats are destroyed, so there is not a problem with the dying flowers.

Each district has their own flower field, which grows over 400.000 flowers that will be used exclusively for the floats.

He also linked a time-lapse video from last year that shows the process of covering the floats with flowers (finished float here). You can see the entire 2016 parade in this video.
