I have my modem and router inside a big antique radio cabinet -which has vents on all sides, to keep the vacuum tubes from overheating. Then we have a flatscreen TV on top, because there's no way to have a modern family in a completely antique house!

Glad someone posted this. It would seem common sense loses when pretty is involved. It's about as bad as the innumerable blog posts out there that tell people to use pallet wood for furniture.

I've got a shiny black Netgear router that stands on end like a book on my top of my bookcase, and I could easily make it look like a book if I taped a back on it. Though with all blinkenlights covered with electrical tape no one notices it anyway.
