1. Being a waitress *is* a real job. It involves talking to real people and actual physical labor, which makes it a bit realer than banking.
2. Getting a job, “real” or otherwise, isn’t an easy thing these days. I’ve heard things have been improving, but for a while there were 5 unemployed people for every open job.
3. Part of the reason for the bad economy is unethical behavior on the part of the financial sector. I’m not saying all bankers are bad people, and they do work very hard, but I’m certainly not familiar with anything restaurant wait staff have been doing to tank the economy.

Actually tipping hurts people who do these kinds of jobs; it allows the boss to pay them less, frequently less than minimum wage. I think tipping should no longer be standard, rather it should be only for rare circumstances with a person like a doorman, babysitter, hair-cutter, etc and then only once a year. People serving you food should get a reliable living wage in bi-weekly paychecks. Period. No one should be tipped for just doing their job, nor should they depend on generous people instead of this jerk. It is not fair to them and it is hard to justify socially. No one tips pilots and doctors who do among the most important things. They don’t need tips because they get good wages. Others should have the same thing.

COGIC convention used to do stuff to servers like this here. They weren’t rich…they just didn’t feel obligated to tip. When the convention moved to St. Louis, all the waitstaff I know was overjoyed. They used to just take the whole week off if they were able because it wasn’t even worth showing up to work. Sixty and seventy dollar tabs, maybe a buck or two tip…if it wasn’t a prayer tract that looked like a folded ten dollar bill under the ticket…
You don’t have to be rich to be a jerk, that’s for sure.

The receipt is probably real but the story sounds absolutely bogus. A stingy banker, with absolutely no provocation, leaves crappy tips and condescending remarks on receipts at the places he frequents because he thinks everyone is so beneath him. It is all just a little too convenient not to be fabricated for political purposes. Also the Twitter account happens to get deleted too. Maybe the evil banker’s skilled assassins took her out Probably whoever posted it chickened-out after this went viral.

I very seldom put the tip on my credit card. I prefer to pay the tip in cash. Then the server has the option of reporting how much tip they got to the tax collector. They don’t make that much $ to start with so the less they have to report at tax time the better for them.

As far as the get a real job comment. The waiter has a REAL job. They work a hell of a lot harder than the banker does for what they earn. And if it weren’t for waiters and cooks, the banker would have to cook his own meals and do his own dishes.

I’ve done something similar but it was because the waitress was shit and the restaurant would be better without her. They lost my business,I refuse to go back; if they get replace the crap wait-staff they might save a customer later.
My tip was zero and in the line I wrote “Fire Lindsay” hoping that the manager sees the receipts; I’m not going to encourage bad behavior because it’s a “custom” to tip. Likewise I’ll tip 25% or more for good service.

I was a waiter for a couple of years and ran into these kind of people occasionally. It was a good job, I had a good time, made lots of friends, made decent money and it gave me a lot of practical experience in dealing with people, managing time and effort and working for an honest buck.
The really bad thing is this server most likely PAID for him to be served. Most restaurants require servers to tip out (in my case it was 3%) so with a 1% tip it cost her money to serve him.

That is a crock put about by people who don’t want to tip. I don’t know about where you live, but hereabouts it is flat illegal to pay basic wage below the legal minimum.
Even so I never tip on the credit card bill, I always tip cash in hand to the staff. Not because bosses might not pass on the full tip, but because I don’t necessarilly want the tip sharing out between the staff. There may be some slackers in there.

This is certainly fake. I saw the original on Reddit. It was actually a 33$ bill, with a 7$ tip. Every number on the real and fake bill matched except the handwriting.
